Yesterday’s NSW GAA championships at Mono Park in Sydney produced some very exciting, football, hurling, camogie and ladies football as we had this year’s semi finals fixtures down for decision. In the first mens football semi final, table leaders Clan Na Gael put paid to league winners Cormac McAnallen’s ambitions when holding on for a nailing biting 2 point win, while in the other semi final, league runners-up Michael Cusacks had an impressive victory over Penrith Gaels. In the one ladies football semi final clash on Sunday, after falling behind early in the game, Michael Cusacks came back to overcome a spirited Clan, however, Clan Na Gael had better luck in Camogie when defeating McAnallens by 6 points. In hurling meanwhile, Sydney Shamrocks narrow 2 point win over last year’s champs, Craobh Padraig sets them up for a rematch with league final rivals ‘Cusacks. To tell us about the games is NSW GAA Secretary, Mark McGuinness.

In the other football game on Sunday, Penrith Gaels triumphed over Young Irelands and this defeat sees last year’s champions YI move to the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, in a repeat of the camogie league final, Central Coast took revenge for that loss when trumping Clan Na Gael in Rd 4 of the championship. In ladies football there was wins for Cormac McAnallens and all conquering, Central Coast who received their stiffest test yet from ‘Cusacks. To tell us about Sunday’s action is NSW GAA Secretary, Mark McGuinness.

At Mono Park, Sydney yesterday, Round 7 of the 2010 NSW League in mens football saw Penrith Gaels gain a measure of revenge over table toppers Michael Cusacks, for their defeat to them in last year’s ‘League final. The win solidifies Penrith’s third table spot and increases their chances of again reaching the playoff stages. Meanwhile, Young Irelands win over Cormac MacAnallens on Sunday sees them just within a point of top place while ‘Macs have a big test ahead of them next week in the last round when taking on Clan NaGael for that all important final playoff birth.
In Camogie Clan Na Gael increased their lead at the head of the table when beating Craobh Padraig while second place Central Coast had an emphatic win over MacAnallens. While the top two seem destined to meet in the final, ’Cusacks at the bottom look the likely ones to lose out for a playoff place.
In Ladies Football the position at the top is a reverse of the standings in Camogie in so far as Central Coast in this instance continue to lead the way when recording a comprehensive victory over third place ‘Cusacks, while second place Clan Na Gael maintain their place with a six point win over ‘MacAnallens on a scoreline of 0-11 to 1-2 (5).
There was no hurling fixtures down for decision on Sunday.
So all is in readiness for a few hectic weeks of Gaelic games action in Mono Park as this year’s League arrives at the knockout stages where points accumalated won’t mean a hell of a lot from here on in.

NOTE:
There will be Podcast reports for the knock-out stages of the NSW League

Round 5 of the NSW League in Sydney this weekend saw last year’s Hurling Championship winners Craobh Padraig turn their mediocre league form around when they recorded a four point win over joint table toppers and 2009 League champs’ Michael Cusacks. Craobh Padraig now lie in third spot on 8 points with three rounds left before the knock-out stages begin. In the other hurling fixture, Shamrocks had an easy victory over Central Coast and this win now sees them move into top spot with ‘Cusacks.
In mens football ‘Cusacks win over Clan NaGael sees them leapfrog Young Irelands at the top, however, they nearly came a cropper against bottom of the table ‘Clan who just lost out by a point. Penrith meanwhile moved up the table when they beat ‘McAnallens by double scores with both now lying on 8 points. In ladies football Central Coast continue their unbeaten run with an emphatic win over second place Clan NaGael while Cusacks, who with their win over bottom of the table ‘McAnallens, remain in third place. In Camogie Central Coast’s win over Craobh Padraig sees them move into second spot while Clan NaGael remain in pole position as they easily defeated lowly ’Cusacks.

The New South Wales (NSW) GAA League in Sydney is heating up nicely as several attractive clashes last weekend in the Mens Senior Football saw some entertaining fare on offer. Cormac McAnallens received a boost when coming out two point winners over last year’s League champions, Michael Cusacks, in their second game of the season. Another close affair was the game between 2009 Championship winners, Young Irelands and Clan NaGael, with ‘Irelands just getting there in the end with a one point win. ‘Cusacks and ‘Irelands top the table on 7pts each with McAnallen’s on 4, Clan Na Gael and Penrith on 3 each with the latter three having played two games to date.
No hurling games were down for decision last Sunday and after two rounds, ‘Cusacks and Sydney Shamrocks lead the way on 6pts a piece. In Camogie, Clan NaGael continue to impress and top the table while in Ladies Football there is no stopping Central Coast.

Player, umpire and photographer for the day, Aoife Daly assisted GaelicSportsCast when earlier today she sent this report on 2010 Opening Day in Sydney.

A large crowd gathered for New South Wales (NSW) GAA 2010 season Opening Day earlier today, Sunday April 11 in Sydney, Australia.
This year NSW have moved from their regular venue at Princes Park, Auburn to the nearby Mono Park.
The general feeling was very positive and overall folks appear very happy with the new venue.
In Mens Senior Football, the season kicked off with Penrith Gaels and Clan na Gael taking to the field. An exciting first half saw Penrith come smartly out of the blocks to lead 1-4 to 0-2 at half time. Clan fought back well in the second half with the game ending in a draw. It was probably a fair result.
Final Score 1-05 Penrith 0-8 Clan na Gael.

However, last year’s championship men’s winners Young Irelands, got off to a slow start when they suffered an early season setback when defeated by Michael Cussacks 0-6 – 0-4.

In hurling, Central Coast defeated Sydney Shamrocks in a closely contested match and later Michael Cussacks were winners over Craobh Padraig’s in a nail biting game keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

In Ladies Football, Michael Cussacks got off to a great start with a narrow 2 point victory over Cormac McAnallens. The next game saw last year’s championship winners, Central Coast having a comfortable win over Clan na Gael.

Finally, in the Camogie, Craobh Padraig were too strong for Michael Cussacks with Roisin Toomey (Wicklow) having an outstanding game.
Final Score 1-09 to 1-0.

Clan na Gael also proved too much for Cormac Mc Anallens.
Final Score 5-9 to 4-3.

Aoife Daly
