Wisconsin, the beer producing state of America is quietly brewing another favourite passion, the Gaelic sport of hurling. Over the past several years the city of Madison, the state’s capitol, has seen hurling take root amongst the population of this four lake city much like its eastern neighbour, Milwaukee has seen over the past decade. Founded back in 2006, the Madison HC, who affiliated with the North American Gaelic Athletic Association (NAGAA) in the Spring, recently received a huge boost when the club did well in their very first North American Playoffs in the Junior C Shield competition in Chicago. Boosted by this achievement, Madison HC hopes to grow membership and is confident the sport of hurling will continue to prosper in Madison in the future. Here to talk to GaelicSportscast about the club are American players, Madison GM Mike Statz and PRO, Michael Stapleton.

So this year’s Milwaukee Hurling Club Championship has been whittled down to two following last weekend’s semi finals at Brown Deer Park. In the first semi final of the day, McBob’s had it all to do as they were paired with Shamrock Club who went into the game with the best record in the league. However, it was the underdogs McBob’s who prevailed in this one running out four point winners with some fine point scoring helping them to victory. In the second semi final little separated Packy’s and Track’s going into the game and so it was on the field on Sunday as an exciting encounter produced the game of the season. Holding a narrow lead at half time, Tracks pushed on to increase the margin to 4 in the final quarter, however, Packy’s produced a great late rally of a goal and two points, and, from there they never looked back winning by four. Here to tell us about both games is MHC’s, Karen Fink.

MHC Semi Final Results
McBob’s 2-09 (15) Shamrock Club 1-08 (11)
Packy’s 2-11 (17) Track’s 2-07 (13)

County Clare looked like they were going to upset the odds when putting three early goals passed their more fancied opponents, Packy’s. But as the game progressed, experience and a slightly better balanced side, aided Packy’s with a 4th quarter red card shown to a ’Clare player making all the difference with the favorites pulling away in the end. After establishing an early lead, Tracks shut down Trinity in the second period to take the win in their quarter final while McBob’s midfield proved too hot to handle for Slim’s. Here to tell us about the games is MHC’s Karen Fink.

Coming to you a little later than our normal slot of Wednesday evening, we bring you all the latest from the shores of Lake Michigan where the Milwaukee Hurling Club (MHC) League entered Week 7 last weekend. There were four games down for decision last Sunday with the clash between Tracks (4-1) and Co Clare (3-2) one of the highlights of the day as the game had to be decided by OT. Milwaukee seems to have caught the red card bug that has been lately doin’ the rounds in America, as the decisive point in the game came when Co Clare had a player sent to the line and the extra man made the difference in the end for Tracks. In another nail biter, The Irish Pub’s (1-4) defense proved too much for battling Ale House (1-5) with the former coming out three point winners in the end. To tell us about the action is MHC official, Karen Fink.

It was a day of shocks in the Milwaukee Hurling Club (MHC) League last Sunday at Brown Deer Park. Mother nature with thunder storms did her best to disrupt matters but the hardy folks by Lake Michigan braved the day and what a day it turned out to be. Tracks with a healthy record of 3-1 went into their game as underdogs with unbeaten Shamrock Club and in a very competitive affair, it was the less fancied Tracks who pulled off the surprise of the day with a 1 point win. There were further surprises as Brocach and Ale House, with no wins to their name, showed plenty of steel to grab their first victories of the season. To tell us about the action is MHC’s Karen Fink.

In the Packy’s v Brocach game, it was something of a similar story with Packy’s building up a good half time lead with the midfield in particular proving their worth. However, Brocach (0-5) who are desperate for a win, did battle back to shoot 2-4 in the final quarter, and though they fell short, the late surge could stand to them in their next game this weekend with 1-3 The Irish Pub. Here to tell us about the games is MHC’s Karen Fink.

Round 4 of the Milwaukee Hurling Club Championship last weekend provided plenty of exciting action with an upset thrown in for good measure at Brown Deer Park. Slim McGinns were 1-2 going into their game against 3-0 McBob’s, however, the underdogs overturned the favourites by 21 points to 17. To add to the day’s entertainment, two more games went to overtime with Co Clare and Tracks coming out on top in the end over Trinity and Brocach respectively. So approaching the halfway mark in this 10 round championship season, the Shamrock Club (4-0) is looking strong being the only ubeaten team. Here to tell us all about Rd 3 and Rd 4 is MHC’s Karen Fink.

Round 2 of the Milwaukee Hurling Club League saw hot and humid conditions from the early morning last Sunday at Brown Deer Park. Conditions made it very difficult for some but McBob’s and Shamrock Club thrived with impressive wins and they now lead this 10 team league with two wins each. Later when things cooled off there was some very exciting fare, especially Packy’s one point win over Slim McGinn’s. In another nailbiter with the last puck of the game, Co Clare won a very exiting contest against Brocach. To tell us all about the day is MHC’s Karen Fink.
