There was plenty to whet the appetite last weekend at Canton in the Northeast GAA Championships with crowds attending the Boston Irish Cultural Festival at the grounds taking in some exciting football and hurling action.

In senior hurling, a first round clash and repeat of the 2011 final saw Tipperary once more proving too much for Galway, while in Junior C Hurling, Portland had Worcester’s number this time around.

In mens senior football, Aidan McAnespies had a comfortable win over Connemara Gaels to go top of the table.
Donegal got back to winning ways over Kerry, while Armagh Notre Dame had their first win of the championship with a victory over Cork.
Meanwhile, Mayo secured a good draw with high flying Wolfe Tones.

Here to tell us about all the action is Boston Northeast GAA PRO and reporter, Rory O’Donnell.

In preparation for their upcoming Connacht Football Championship clash with Galway in two weeks time in Gaelic Park in the Bronx, New York played Boston in a challenge match over the weekend in Canton, MA. Even though the Big Apple took the spoils, reporter Eugene Kyne says that New York have a lot of work to do between now and the Galway game on May 2. Eugene also gave us the lowdown on two matches from Gaelic Park, which saw Tyrone Juniors record a comprehensive win over Westmeath, while Dublin Intermediates edged out Astoria.

Already, you might have it the back of your mind to be considering heading to the States this summer to play Gaelic Games. In this latest podcast, GaelicSportCast gives a heads-up on what to expect as we speak with longtime Leitrim Senior footballer, Colin Regan about his experiences when he played football in Chicago and Boston. Colin, after taking a break from intercounty football over the past two seasons, is now back with the county panel and will line out this Sunday, Jan 31 at wing back in the FBD Insurance League match against Sligo at Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada, Carrick-on-Shannon.

With its large Irish American background, the City of Boston has attracted many Irish natives to its meandering streets. For well over a century, by sharing a love of Gaelic games with each other, the Irish were able to keep in touch with their roots back home while making new friends in their new home in America. It is no surprise then that presently, Boston boasts the largest concentration of Gaelic games clubs in the North American County Board arena. Today GaelicSportsCast visits with one of those clubs, the Boston Shamrocks Ladies Gaelic Football Club and to founder member, Kathleen Rohan, who talks about the history and future of the club.
