It may only be the second round of the 2012 NSW Hurling League in Sydney, but champions Michael Cusacks laid down a marker on Sunday when comprehensively beating rivals Sydney Shamrocks at Monarch Fields in Ingleburn.

These two have crossed swords many times especially in NSW GAA finals. They met in three recent memorable deciders and each time ‘Shamrocks got the better of their opponents in the finals of the league and championship of 2010, and again in the 2011 championship decider. However, Michael Cusacks revenged that defeat on Sunday with a comprehensive [31] 4-19 to [14] 2-8 hammering of their great rivals. But will they repeat that result in a final against the same opposition?
In the other hurling game, Craobh Padraig got back on track with a comfortable victory over Cormac McAnallens. Michael Cusacks now lead the league on four points.

In mens senior football table toppers, ‘Cusacks and Penrith Gaels, continued their good early form when recording wins over new side Bondi Gaels and Young Ireland respectively. Penrith had a much easier time of it than league champions ‘Cusacks, who had just three points to spare over the rookies from Bondi. In the final mens game of the day, 2011 championship runners-up Clan na Gael recovered from their opening round defeat to prove too much for Cormac McAnallens.

Meanwhile in the ladies football, last year’s impressive league and championships winners, Central Coast were too strong for Young Ireland. In the second game however, we had something of a surprise as Clan’ scored a good victory over 2011 league runners-up ‘Cusacks. The Penrith’ v ‘McAnallens match was postponed. ‘Coast lead the league with two wins from two.

On to camogie where there were two games on the schedule with the first seeing championship winners and runners-up in this competition last year, Michael Cusacks accounting for McAnallens, while 2011 league winners and championship runners-up, ‘Coast defeated ‘Clan. The respective winners share top position in the table.

In Mens Senior Football, Roger Casements moved up two places to fourth postion when recording an eight point victory over Naomh Padraig, who now slip to sixth. Second from the bottom John Mitchells received a boost when they defeated St Marys by seven points. However, the clash between league leaders Sean McDemotts and St. Barnabas ended unsatisfactorily as the game had to be abandoned. There is a Warwickshire GAA CCC meeting tonight to investigate the matter.

The Intermediate football league meanwhile, saw wins for Sons of Erin, St. Brendans and St. Finbars. The victory for ‘Erin now puts them top of the table.

In Men’s Senior Football Division 1, the wind made it difficult, however the two scheduled games were close affairs. Easts v Souths saw the former, with two early goals, lead at the break by four points having played with the wind. Souths started to win midfield in the second half and slowly fought their way back into the game. They took the lead 10 mins from the end, and though the lead changed hands before the final whistle, the Souths with two great points from frees by Shane McKenna and another from play, saw them home by a point. Midfielder Paul O’ Leary had a great second half at for Souths and got good support from Ronan Brady and Stephen Tormey. For Easts, the Bowe brothers, Rory and Eamon, as well as Conor Carroll and Owen Stephens, had strong games.

The Harps versus John Mitchels match was just as close an encounter with again the wind a factor. It turned out to be a good victory for Harps over a ‘Mitchels side that had recently put in back-to-back wins. The Harps, playing against the wind in the second half, coped much better than their opponents, and a couple of late points was enough to give them a good victory. ‘Mitchels had a few opportunities late in the game but failed to take their chances. Steve McHugh put in another man-of-the-match for Harps, while Oisin Lynch at half back, covered a lot of ground and setup several scoring chances with Eamon Fitzpatrick also doing well for Harps. Both players had already played in the hurling match. For John Mitchels, John Mallon, Michael Murphy, Tony Whelan, had all strong games.

In the only senior hurling match, Emeralds managed to stay in touch with Na Fianna in the first half but playing against the wind in the second proved that bit too difficult and Na Fianna ran out easy winners. Both sides were slow to get going and scores were hard to come but eventually they arrived with some fine long range shooting. Best for Na Fianna were Brendan Coady, Pat Marnane, Rory Conroy, while Rob Ryan, Stephen Henry, David McDonagh, were best for Emeralds,

In Ladies Football, John Mitchels had a very easy win over a new Harps team. A lot of the Harps girls were having their first run at Gaelic Football and they put in a good effort, and with a bit more coaching and games, they will improve in the coming weeks. For John Mitchels, Jannette Newell was strong in defense while Laura Shaugnessy took some great scores.

The Easts v Souths game was a thriller and could have gone either way. Easts, playing with a strong wind, went in at half time just 3 points ahead, but two quick goals just after the restart, seemed to set them up for an easy win. However, the Souths kept coming back and managed to draw level with 10 mins left, but two quick points from Easts best player, Aileen O’Loughlin, got them over the line. Souths have really improved and any idea this was going to be a two horse race between John Mitchels and Easts this year needs to be dismissed. Brid Guy and Karen Bowe, played well for Easts, while Souths had good players in Bridget O’ Brien, Grainne Heduan and Helen McAleer.

In Mens Division 2 Football there was wins for John Mitchells and Souths (Easts Celts forfeit).

This year sees a number of new teams in competition for the first time with Bondi Gaels joining the men’s senior football league, bringing the number of teams to six. In hurling, Cormac McAnallens have also added a squad leaving five teams to battle it out for 2012 honours. There is a new team as well in ladies football as Penrith Gaels make it a six team league, while in camogie, the number is unchanged at five, however the format moves from a 7-a-side competition to 9-a-side.

In Round 1 of the Mens Football League, there was three games scheduled last Sunday with last year’s champions Michael Cusacks getting off to a good start with a comfortable win over Young Ireland, while 2011 runners-up Cormac McAnallens had too much for brave rookies, Bondi. The third game saw a positive result for Penrith when defeating last season’s championship runners-up, Clan na Gael.

Two games in mens senior hurling, saw champions ‘Cusacks record an easy victory over newcomers ‘McAnallens, while Central Coast held out for a thrilling one point win over Craobh Padraig.

In ladies football meanwhile, we had victories for champions Central Coast, Michael Cusacks, with an impressive win also for Cormac McAnallens over Clan’. Finally in camogie, champions ‘Coast put up a big score against ‘McAnallens, while ‘Cusacks put in a similar performance versus Craobh Padraig.

This year GaelicSportsCast has a regular Sydney Sunday podcast lined up starting this weekend, May 13.
Meanwhile, the folks in Toronto had their Season Opening last Sunday and GaelicSportsCast will bring you a weekly podcast from there every Thursday starting tomorrow, May 10.

In preparation for the season ahead, we are finalizing weekly podcasts also from Boston, New York, Milwaukee, Chicago, Brisbane, Vancouver, Europe, London, Lancashire, as well as other cities in the U.S.

A weekly 2012 World GAA Podcast Schedule will be announced shortly. Where it is not possible to have podcasts from certain regions, text reports & results will be posted when available.

NOTE: New ebook being finalized for worldwide publication and will be out soon … watch for updates.

Senior Football league leaders, Sean McDermotts (extra game) had a very easy win over fourth place St. Mary’s, while next in line St. Barnabas, received a walkover in their game against second from the bottom, John Mitchells. The most competitive game on Sunday saw an important result for Naomh Padraig when they recorded a four point win over third place Erin-go-Bragh. Next weekend promises to be an exciting one as Sean McDermotts and St. Barnabas go head-to-head in a top of the table clash.

Yesterday’s intermediate football league saw more competitive games as Sons of Erin had a good win over leaders St. Josephs, with victories also for St. Chads and Rugby Gaels.

Den Haag impressed throughout the tournament and were a level above the competition. Though Paris put in a fine Round 1 performance with their old guard hurling with determination and pride, Den Hague were never troubled in the final which they took on a scoreline of [15] 0-15 to [4] 0-4.

The Paris ladies had more luck though as they took Camogie honours when beating Holland by [14] 3-5 to [ 0-6] 6 in the decider. The Paris camogie team had put a lot of work into training over the winter and it showed throughout this tournament.

In the Mens Championship there was four teams competing – Paris, Belgium, Luxembourg and Den Hague with last year’s champions Zurich, unable to travel. Paris had several former Zurich players on their team, while Belgium, who have a proud legacy in European hurling circles, were troubled with injury before and during the competition, but nevertheless took third sport when defeating a depleted Luxembourg squad.

Six teams lined out in Round 1 of the Camogie Championship – Luxembourg, Holland, Zurich, Paris, Belgium and Luxembourg and it turned out to be a very entertaining competition.
The Paris girls were very fit and committed, while Holland built their team around an All Ireland winning Cork midfielder. Zurich ladies did travel to this event and the 80 % all Swiss side did very well with a win over Holland. Belgium last year’s champions, overcame a brave Luxembourg to take third place in what was a high scoring and very competitive tournament.

The next round of the 2012 European Hurling and Camogie Championship takes place in Zurich, Switzerland on May 12.

Bad weather in Birmingham disrupted the fifth round of the Warwickshire GAA League as conditions made the grounds unplayable and all games in the Senior Football and Intermediate Leagues at Pairc na hEireann had to be postponed.

Meanwhile down under in Queensland, Australia, the city of Brisbane got another weather battering with heavy rains once more causing havoc with all games in the Carpenter Cup mens and ladies football, and hurling, called off.

To complicate matters further for local GAA organizers, next weekend is a Holiday and there is no schedule of games.
Queensland GAA, after having coped with massive flooding last year are finding things equally difficult this season as three nights of the Summer League have been lost to bad weather with only two rounds played to date.

Thames TV is currently looking for sports clubs across the UK to participate in a sports entertainment spectacular to be aired early this summer. Team, clubs and societies from all sports ranging from Gaelic Sports, BMX to Lawn Bowls and from Fencing to Free Running can take part with the chance of winning £100,000 for their community or club.

This represents a good opportunity to showcase Gaelic sports on a grand scale through a 90 second performance in studio. No matter what level the clubs, it’s all about entertaining the nation with big prize money at stake. The performance would contain all the disciplines of Gaelic sports and would be put together by the club with the assistance of a renowned choreographer who would help coordinate and offer advice.

Team sizes must be a minimum of 2 but there is no upper limit on the number of people performing in the group. Age limit is starting from 13.

For more information contact Thames TV Associate Producer: Lydia Akonas at Lydia.Akonas@thames.tv

In the Senior Football Carpenter Cup, John Mitchels continued their good form when beating Souths by a comfortable seven point margin. The Souths, who were having their first run out of the season, have lost a few key members from last year through players moving interstate and injuries, but should still be a force.
‘Mitchels were always in control in this game with Tony Whelan and Charlie Byrne patrolling the middle and Brian Hay at center back making it difficult for the Souths forwards. His opposite number, Ronan Brady had a strong game for Souths, while Paul O’ Leary never got going in the hot conditions at midfield. For their first game, the Souths will be happy with some of the new players showing. The win sees John Mitchels go top of the table.

In the other senior football game, Harps were too strong for an improving Shamrocks. Harp’s Johnny Jordan was on song with some fine scores, while Steven McHugh profited in the middle picking up breaking ball for a fast moving forward line. Shamrocks had some very good players in Shane Butler and Matt Mayo.

The first Senior Hurling game of the season was a very close encounter with the new look Emeralds pulling off a fine two point win over the more fancied Cuchulains. Both teams put on an excellent display with some very good hurling. Rob Ryan, Barry McDonagh and Stephen Henry put in strong performances for Emeralds, while best for Cuchulains were Barry Egan, Will O’Shea, and Jimmy Whelan.

In Ladies Football, under strength John Mitchels got their second win with a comfortable victory over Souths, who were also having their first game of the season. Souths have picked up some new players and should improve with a few more games. ‘Mitchel’s Laura Shaughnessy took some fine scores while Janet Newell and Cathy Crowe were solid in defense. Souths Goalkeeper Claire Nolan, had a good game with some fine saves, while Orla Carey and Grainne Heduan tried hard outfield.

Meanwhile in Mens Football Division 2, John Mitchels had three points to spare over Souths, while Harps put in an impressive display against Shamrocks.

Report Seamus O’Sullivan, Queensland & Australasia GAA Chairman.

After three rounds of the 2012 Warwickshire Senior Football League, St Barnabas, Sean McDermotts, and Erin -go-Bragh are all going well as they share the lead at the top of the table. All three have yet to register a loss and so far have managed to avoid each other but this changes next weekend when ‘Barnabas take on Erin’.

In the Intermediate Football League, St Joseph’s lead the way on 6 points with two wins from two, while Sons of Erin are in second spot on 4 in this eight team competition.

Meanwhile, in hurling the Warwickshire Senior team came out second best in the Allianz Hurling League 3B 2012 Final when falling to Fermanagh on Sunday at Parnell Park, Dublin on a scoreline of [21] 2-15 [11] 2-5. Nevertheless, the Warwickshire side had a great run in the league considering it was their very first time in the competition and will take positives going into their opening round of the Lory Meagher Cup in May.

Games on Saturday and Sunday saw a competitive start to the Senior Men’s Football competition with John Mitchel’s impressing with a good win over Shamrocks. Players who caught the eye were Peter Scullion, Stuart Roddy, and Garrett Hallagan, while new players, Shane Butler and Colm Crinnigan had strong games for the Shamrocks. Though beaten the Shamrocks appear much improved on last season.

The Easts Celts v Harps game was something of a see-saw battle, and a draw was a fair result in very trying conditions. Regular Alan Murphy and Owen Stephens did well for East Celts, while Eamon Fitzpatrick and Oisin Lynch were Harps best on the day. The Souths play their first game next weekend.

The Ladies Football competition has really started where it finished last year, with both Easts Celts and John Mitchel’s looking very strong once more. Souths too should field a stronger team for their first game next week, but it looks like it’s a two horse race again this year. Both Easts and John Mitchel’s have some very talented players.

Results April 14 – 15, 2012 @ Brisbane

Senior Men Football
John Mitchels [31] 5-16 Shamrocks [11] 1-8
Easts Celts [14] 0-14 Harps [14] 2-8

Ladies Football
Easts Celts [37] 7-16 Harps [3] 0-3
John Mitchels won on Forfeit from Shamrocks.

Div 2 Men Football
John Mitchels [38] 4-26 Shamrocks [0] 0-0

The competition marks the opening round of this year’s Central & East European Gaelic Football Championship with four men’s and women’s football teams taking to the field at Warsaw Sports Academy to battle it out for the Warsaw Cup.

Cumann Warszawa got its start in 2010 when a few Irish men and women living in Warsaw decided it was time to start off a GAA club in the city. Two years later the club boasts both men’s and women’s teams which are very much international in flavour as players hail from Israel, Norway, Sweden, Mauritius, and of course Poland.

Teams from four countries – Germany (Munich Colmcilles), Czech Republic (Prague Hibernians), Slovakia (Slovakia Shamrocks) Austria (Vienna Gaels) join the Polish club for an all day tournament with important first round points up for grabs in the Central & East European region.

Laois. (Photo Ray McManus-Sportsfile).

The North American County Board (NACB) today launched their much anticipated Five Year Action Plan for Gaelic sports in the U.S. The five year plan looks to take Gaelic sports to the next level in America and offer a viable way forward for the 53 year organization.

The plan has a broad outline with focus on structures, finance, and operations, along with communications, sponsorship and marketing, as well as player welfare, volunteerism, facilities, and games development.

At the launch, outgoing GAA President Christy Cooney, praised work being done in America and called the plan timely, “North America has traditionally been a hot bed for our games and never before has there been as much importance attached to being well organised and efficient in how we organise and promote our activities.
“Four years ago the Association at central level published a Strategic Vision Plan with the intention of streamlining our activities and realising a set of attainable and measurable goals. Since then we have encouraged our units – at all levels – to do likewise. I am delighted that so many have engaged in this process, not least boards like that in North America.”

The NACB GAA Chairman, American Joe Lydon said the initiative will lead to the advancement of Gaelic sports across the U.S.
“This Action Plan provides us with the road-map ahead. It is another milestone for our Association and we are certain that it will enhance the association at all levels in the NACB area.”
Mr. Lydon, the only American chairman since the foundation of the NACB in 1959, hopes the new initiative can surpass expectations and herald a new dawn for Gaelic sports in America while at the same time point the GAA as a more meaningful world sporting body.
“Our challenge is to not only to reach our targets and goals but to exceed them and develop our organisation to a level not envisaged when it was first set up. Truly then the GAA can boast of being an international Association underpinned by strong and vibrant units outside of Ireland.”
Along with the NACB, its working partner the Munster GAA, was also involved with the drawing up of the new strategy.

(Details of the Five Year Plan not available at the time of writing.)

The ‘Runners went unbeaten throughout the competition and Wellington GAA President, Donal Kavanagh gives us this report on Finals Day from the land of the Kiwi.
A great first semi, played in very good conditions at Ian Galloway Park. Daseys Midnight Runners got off to a flying start, leading by 1-2 to no score after 5 minutes. The Runners form all year has been built on strong defence and they were no different on Sunday. Hankey Street Bears got back in the game when scoring the next 2 points to leave a goal between the sides at half time. Again it was the Runners who started the stronger in the 2nd half scoring 4 unanswered points, through Matt Fontanessi, Alana Geering, Ciaran Tully & Lorcan Mitchell. This left the Runners 7 points clear, but it was Hankey St who scored the next goal. This was a great individual effort from Daithi O’ Connor, who won the ball out the field and beat 3 players before a great shot into the top corner. Again the Runners replied with 2 points from Joe Bateman, leaving the scores at 1-8 to 1-2 heading into the final quarter. Hankey Street then tagged a further 2 points from Sean S. Cronin to leave 4 points in it. However a great goal from the ‘Runners, Sinead Kelly, sealed their place in the final.

Semi 2: The Garage [26] 6-8 Cu Chullainn Hounds [17] 4-5
The second semi-final was a real goal fest!
The Garage got off to a flier scoring a goal from the throw-in through Peadar Carr. Peadar was having a great game inside corner forward and went on to score a hat trick of goals in the first half. The Garage policy of kicking high ball into Big 6ft5in Larry Coen was working a treat, with wee Peader feeding off the big man. The ‘Hounds were shell shocked into action and kicked 3 late goals to bring them right back into contention to leave it all-square 4-2 each at the break. The 2nd half went point for point in the opening period. Eimear Murphy & Gary Dillon kicked great scores for The Garage with Aisling O Hagan & Ross Syder replying for the Hounds. This game was eventually decided in the last 2 minutes with 2 goals scored by Maggie Buttle & Colin O’Conghaille to see The Garage running out 9 point victors over a never say die Cu Chullainn Hounds. outfit.

Final: Daseys Midnight Runners [25] 4-13 The Garage [6] 1-3
It was an awesome display by the team of the tournament in the final. The ‘Runners exploded out of the traps and never once took their foot off the pedal! The Garage can have no qualms with this result, as they were comprehensively beaten right through the park.
The Runners were 2-4 to no score ahead early in this game. Ciaran Tully and Paraic Aherne were in total control around the middle of the park, with Joe Bateman & Lorcan Mitchell tormenting the Garages defence. Sinead Kelly & Alan O’ Shea were having great games at the back, and The Garage were finding it very hard to break through. The Garage did score 2 late points in that first half through Peter Cody and Big Larry Coen. The Runners, Oliver Conway, was doing a very good man marking job on Big Larry.
Again the Runners started very strongly in the 2nd half, scoring a further 1-4. The goal was a great effort by Matt Fontanessi, with points from Alana Geering, Joe Bateman and Ciaran Tully. The Garage did score a consolation goal late on through their captain Eoin Farrell. Best for The Garage were Eimear Murphy, Elaine Harrington & Jenn Chowaniec who never gave up, in a game where they were being put under severe pressure right through. The Runners were superb in this final and it was a complete team effort. Captain Joe Bateman was delighted to accept the Cup on behalf of his troops with Player of the Match going to Ciaran Tully from the ‘Runners.
