Teams from all across America and Canada will gather for the annual national playoffs to decide who should be crowned North American champions for 2010.
It promises to be the biggest yet in terms of participation as the weekend’s championships sees 78 teams from 22 cities competing in some 90 games. The Vancouver’s Junior A hurlers, will be competing for the first time in a generation and will be hoping to bring a trophy back to the north west of Canada.

Chicago last hosted the games back in 2007 and the mammoth organisational task for the local committee will see games played at the main playing facility at Gaelic Park as well as at five additional fields at the GAA complex.
The American GAA Championships is set to attract over 6000 people to this Labour Day weekend event and the stage is set for a feast of Gaelic football, hurling and camogie.

After a low scoring first half, that saw McBob’s shading things, the battle heated considerably in the second as an early brace of goals from McBob’s pushed them out into a seven point lead. Packy’s though were not about to give in and slowly started to reduce the deficit. With the margin down to four entering the closing stages Packy’s had renewed hope, however, a late goal from McBob’s sealed the deal and the championship on a scoreline of McBob’s 3-10 (19) Packy’s 2-5 (11). To tell us about the final and MHC’s preparations for the national finals in Chicago on the weekend, is MHC administrator Karen Fink.

The Boston Northeast Division Championships drew to a close over the weekend with easy victories for the winners of both the senior football and senior hurling championships. In men’s senior football, the final saw old rivals Donegal and Aidan McAnespies battling it out for the top prize in regional football. The game failed to catch fire as a contest for Donegal took a hold on proceedings early in the match before going on to record a deserved 8 point margin of victory. In senior hurling, defending champions Tipperary proved far too strong for Galway and never looked in trouble running out emphatic 10 point winners. Shannon Blues took the intermediate football crown when beating Kerry while in the two best games of the weekend, Aidan McAnespies edged Donegal by a point in the Junior A Football final while in the corresponding hurling final, Fr Tom Bukes with a late goal snatched victory from Tipp. Here to tell us about the Boston finals is reporter, Rory O’Donnell.

NY Cork finished top seed in this year’s senior football championship table when recording a comfortable win over second place and last year’s champions, Down, yesterday at Gaelic Park in the Bronx. We also saw fourth place Tyrone dash Donegal’s hopes of making it to the playoffs with an 8 point victory and the winners now go on to play Cavan in the quarter finals in two weeks time. The other quarter final will feature third place Leitrim against sixth place Kerry with the winners of that to face Cork in the semi final at the end of September. We also had a number of important intermediate and junior football games to decide playoff spots and here to tell us about the weekend’s action in Gaelic Park is NY GAA reporter Eugene Kyne.

Galway, one of the oldest clubs in Boston, sprang somewhat of a surprise in the senior hurling championship semi final last weekend when comprehensively beating the more fancied Wexford at Canton. Galway will now take on Tipperary in the final on Sunday. Meanwhile in mens football, favourites Aidan McAnespies had a comfortable win over Armagh Notre Dame, who found themselves in the semi final after an objection, in their loss to Shannon Blues, awarded them the points and third place position. This meant that Donegal and St Christopher’s in joint fourth spot had to playoff and it was Donegal who came out on top in that one on Sunday. Donegal are due to play Wolfe Tones in the second semi final tonight Wednesday in Canton. To tell us about the games and the results of the Intermediate and Junior semi finals in both hurling and football, we spoke earlier to GAA reporter Rory O’Donnell from New Hampshire.

Two more teams qualified for the semi finals in September where in the most important game to decide semi placings we saw Sean Treacy’s defeat Fr Murphy’s by 4 points on a scoreline of 1-12 (15) to 1-08 (11). Treacy’s did last year’s champs St Gabriels a favour, for despite Gabriels loss in a very close game in their match to Kilburn Gaels 1-14 (17) to 1-13(16), they nevertheless qualified for the semi finals. Though they had finished level on points with Fr Murphy’s, they had already beaten them earlier in the season. Robbert Emmetts, already in the semis, meanwhile had a facile 4-31 (43) 1-04 (7) win over last year’s intermediate champions, Granuaille who now unfortunately return to the lower grade. There was also semi finals in both Intermediate and Junior football down for decision. Moindearg intermediates beat North London Shamrocks by 1-08 (11) to 1-05 (8) while Round Towers accounted for Heston Gaels in the other semi, 0-12 to 0-4. Finally in the Junior semis, Cuchullains won out over Robert Emmetts, 1-16 (19) to 2-05 (11) while Garryowen on Sunday beat St Anthonys 0-10 to 0-06. Here to tell us about last weekend’s games is London GAA Chairman, Tommy Harrell.

Yesterday’s NSW GAA championships at Mono Park in Sydney produced some very exciting, football, hurling, camogie and ladies football as we had this year’s semi finals fixtures down for decision. In the first mens football semi final, table leaders Clan Na Gael put paid to league winners Cormac McAnallen’s ambitions when holding on for a nailing biting 2 point win, while in the other semi final, league runners-up Michael Cusacks had an impressive victory over Penrith Gaels. In the one ladies football semi final clash on Sunday, after falling behind early in the game, Michael Cusacks came back to overcome a spirited Clan, however, Clan Na Gael had better luck in Camogie when defeating McAnallens by 6 points. In hurling meanwhile, Sydney Shamrocks narrow 2 point win over last year’s champs, Craobh Padraig sets them up for a rematch with league final rivals ‘Cusacks. To tell us about the games is NSW GAA Secretary, Mark McGuinness.

It was a joyous day for the New York Offaly hurling club yesterday, Sunday Aug 22, as they took their fourth senior hurling championship title in a row in this year’s hurling final at Gaelic Park in the Bronx. This was a repeat of last year’s conclusion to the hurling season, and it was Offaly again, who in a close match, proved too much for Tipperary with a superb defensive display laying the foundation for a deserved 0-16 to 0-11 victory. We also saw the decider in the ladies senior football championship when last year’s champions Na Fianna once again proved their worth as they overcame an early Cavan lead to push on for a 4 point win on a scorline of 0-17 to 1-10 (13). Here to tell us about both finals and the important Kerry v Leitrim football clash is NY GAA reporter, Eugene Kyne.

So this year’s Milwaukee Hurling Club Championship has been whittled down to two following last weekend’s semi finals at Brown Deer Park. In the first semi final of the day, McBob’s had it all to do as they were paired with Shamrock Club who went into the game with the best record in the league. However, it was the underdogs McBob’s who prevailed in this one running out four point winners with some fine point scoring helping them to victory. In the second semi final little separated Packy’s and Track’s going into the game and so it was on the field on Sunday as an exciting encounter produced the game of the season. Holding a narrow lead at half time, Tracks pushed on to increase the margin to 4 in the final quarter, however, Packy’s produced a great late rally of a goal and two points, and, from there they never looked back winning by four. Here to tell us about both games is MHC’s, Karen Fink.

MHC Semi Final Results
McBob’s 2-09 (15) Shamrock Club 1-08 (11)
Packy’s 2-11 (17) Track’s 2-07 (13)

In the fourth and final round of this year’s Scandinavian Mens Senior Football regional championships at Gothenburg, Sweeden last Saturday Aug 14, it was league leaders Stockholm who came away with the spoils to take this year’s title. The boys from Stockholm had a very strong squad at their disposal, complete with a number of recent former inter-county talent, when they took on the best from Malmo, Copenhagen and hosts Gothenburg - Oslo was a late withdrawal. Stockholm proved their worth when winning all three games in the tournament but they were given a test in the final when up against the host club who acquitted themselves very well but the greater football nous from the visitors won out in the end. Here to tell us about the tournament and about the Gothenburg GAA club is their chairman, Limerick man, Bill Finn.

In the second last round of this year’s London GAA Hurling Championship at Ruislip last weekend, we saw the champions of last year St Gabriels fighting for dear life to stay in contention as a loss to Fr Murphy’s would see them out of the running. However, Gabriels showed that they are still a force to be reckoned with when beating their opponents by a comfortable margin with Corkman, Martin Finn starring, shooting 2-6 (12) of his side’s 3-15 (24) against Murphy’s 3-06 (15). Robert Emmetts and Kilburn Gaels with wins over Sean Treacys and Granuaille respectively finished top of the table and go straight into the semis, and this leaves Gabriels, Treacy’s and Fr Murphy’s having to battle it out for the other semis spots this weekend. Meanwhile in football, St Kiernans qualified for the semis when shooting 1-2 in injury time to tie and knock out Kerry Kingdon Gaels in a controversial finish. Neasden Gaels, 2009 championship runners-up, secured their semi final place with an easy win over Fulham as did Parnells with a similar victory over Tara. Last year’s champions Tir Chonaill Gaels also qualified when they squashed Brendans and amazingly managed to keep their opponents scoreless for the entire duration.
Here to tell us about the games last weekend is London GAA Chairman, Tommy Harrell.

It’s playoff time in Boston as this weekend sees two semi finals in mens senior football and one semi final in hurling take center stage at Canton outside Boston. This means that last weekend was crunch time for teams trying desperately to stay in contention for a playoff birth. One such team in the football was last year’s Intermediate champions Armagh Notre Dame, who were pitted against ‘09 runners up Shannon Blues and after a tight opening half, it was the ‘Blues who showed the necessary appetite when pulling away for an easy win. The Armagh loss meant that both Donegal and St Christopher’s got through, finishing joint 3rd behind, ‘Wolfe Tones and Aidan McAnespies. Table toppers Wolfe Tones who had already booked their place in next week’s semis, had a narrow win over Kerry while Mac’s had an impressive win over Galway. Last year’s champions, ‘Christopher’s also got a win on Saturday when beating Connemara Gaels. Meanwhile in the big hurling clash on Sunday, Fr Tom Burkes with a win over league leaders, Tipperary had a shot at a semi final birth but they were well beaten by Tipp. The previous day Wexford accounted for Cork and so meet Galway in next Sunday’s hurling semi final.

After a rain delay and surf weekend break, the NSW GAA championship resumed in earnest over the weekend with the start of the championship playoff round. The result that caught the eye yesterday at Mono Park, Sydney, was in seeing last year’s senior football champions Young Ireland’s go out of this year’s competition when easily beaten by surprise league winner’s, Cormac McAnnallens. Mac’s were dominant throughout and handed out a 14 point mauling to the YI’s. Meanwhile hurling champions, Craobh Padraig did much better when continuing recent good form, they recorded a similar margin of victory over Central Coast, while in another rematch of the league final, Michael Cusacks booked their place in the hurling final with a four point win over league winners, Sydney Shamrocks. ‘Shamrock’s will now play Craobh Padraig in the semi final next weekend. In Camogie, favourites Clan na Gael and Central Coast proved too much for Craobh Padraig and McAnallens respectively while in ladies football unbeaten Central Coast staked their claim in this year’s final when outsing Cusacks. The latter will now meet Clan na Gael in the semis after they overcame McAnallens on Sunday.

So next week we will have the NSW Championship semi finals taking place where we will see:

10am (H) Sydney Shamrocks v Craobh Padraig
10.50am (C) Clan NaGael v Cormac McAnallens
11.30am (M) Clan NaGael v Cormac McAnallens
1pm (L) Clan NaGael v Michael Cusacks
2.30pm (M) Michael Cusacks v Penrith Gaels

As the New York GAA Championships turned into the home stretch yesterday, the top contenders for this years senior football championship laid down markers with comfortable victories, while in hurling NY Tipperary taking inspiration from their cousins back home, strode into another championship final. In Tipp’s semi final clash with Galway, both teams lined out with some notable inter-county weekend talent on show but it was the blue and gold who drove on for an emphatic victory. In football meanwhile, Cork and Down had very easy wins over Donegal and Kerry respectively, and the winners in a repeat of last year’s final, will now play each other next weekend for a semi final birth. In ladies football, Kerry/Donegal had an 8 point win over Fermanagh in the Peter Connaughton Cup Final, while the championship final proper takes place next Sunday between rivals Na Fianna and Cavan. Here to tell us about the weekends action is NY GAA reporter, Eugene Kyne.

County Clare looked like they were going to upset the odds when putting three early goals passed their more fancied opponents, Packy’s. But as the game progressed, experience and a slightly better balanced side, aided Packy’s with a 4th quarter red card shown to a ’Clare player making all the difference with the favorites pulling away in the end. After establishing an early lead, Tracks shut down Trinity in the second period to take the win in their quarter final while McBob’s midfield proved too hot to handle for Slim’s. Here to tell us about the games is MHC’s Karen Fink.

The London GAA Championships are heating up nicely with things oh so close at the top of both the senior football and hurling tables. At Ruislip on Sunday we saw the runners up of the last two years Neasden Gaels look as if they were going to pull away from Parnells, but the latter came back to grab a draw and a point, to leave both on top of Group 1 on 3 points apiece with one round left to play. There was a fantastic game of hurling between Robert Emmetts and Fr Muphys. It was end to end stuff but it was ‘Emmetts who prevailed in the end by three. In the hurling table with two rounds left there are 4 teams tied on 4 points – Robert Emmetts, Fr Murphys, Kilburn Gaels, and Sean Treacys.
To tell us about the games and the rest of the fixtures is London GAA Chairman, Tommy Harrell.

The trend of American adults taking up the ancient game of hurling continues at breathtaking pace. A month hardly goes by in the US these days without another new all American hurling club arriving on the horizon. One of the latest is the central Florida club, the Orlando Hurling Club. Founded last winter by American, Scott Graves, the club, a mere dream at the start, has begun to put down solid roots in this land of Disney and citrus. GaelicSportsCast recently caught up with Scott to talk about how hurling became a new passion for this baseball loving American and about the club’s recent trip to Georgia to compete for the “Azalea Cup’ in the Inaugural Georgia-Florida

Invitational.

In ladies senior football on Sunday in Canton, MA, reigning champion’s Tir na nOg once more outshone rivals, Boston Shamrocks to take their second ladies Boston Northeast Championship title. The holders led the series by 2-1 going into the game and a win would see them retain their crown. Tir na nOg led by 8 at the break and though a never say die ‘Shamrocks brought it back to a 5 point deficit in the second half, Tir’ pushed on again with a late flourish for a comfortable and deserving win. Meanwhile in mens senior football, with just one more round to play, last year’s runners-up Shannon Blues saw their hopes of making the playoffs evaporate when surprised by Galway. In senior hurling, Fr Tom’s really needed a win for a chance to make the semis yet still maintain some measure of hope as they claimed a point with a draw against Boston Wexford. Here to tell us about the games is Boston GAA reporter, Rory O’Donnell.

This weekend we had some thrilling action at Gaelic Park in the Bronx where a final and two semi finals went right down to the wire. In the Under 21 New York Championship Final yesterday, we saw a late goal from last year’s champions NY St Barnabas deny NY Celtics in a fantastic contest. We had two semi finals down for decision in ladies football with the Cavan and Fermanagh tie producing great drama as it ended in stalemate after normal time. In OT the sides still could not be separated and the replay is now down for Wednesday night. In the other semi final, Kerry/Donegal put it up to holders Na Fianna but late scores was enough to put the champs into another final. Meanwhile, the only mens senior football championship clash saw an important table win for NY Tyrone over NY Cavan. Here to tell us about those games is NY reporter, Eugene Kyne.

Last weekend saw the culmination of this year’s Western Canada GAA Championships at Red Deer, Alberta. Canada GAA Secretary, John O’Flynn was at the tournement and he gave us this report.

Western Canada GAA Chairman Ronan Deane (left) presents the winning cup to Vancouver Harp's, Mikey Hartnett. (Photo courtesy of Vancouver Harps).

The first complete Western Canada tournament to be staged in RED DEER, ALBERTA, can only be described as a resounding success.
Top-class field and facilities, responsive and welcoming hosts, and a very high standard of Gaelic Football played in lush green fields in Alberta (in August). What more could you ask for? OK, so the conspiracy theorists will say that the “release” of 8 billion mosquitoes in the area of the fields was a distraction that the visiting teams struggled with. However, by all accounts, the teams from Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Vancouver are raving about their hosts, and their experiences in this latest Western Canada GAA hub.

The Vancouver Ladies repeated their heroics of 2008, taking both titles back over the Rockies and there were no complaints from the opposition. The Ladies demonstrated great skills but also, keen tactical awareness, to take their 4th title in a row, and over take the Edmonton Wolfe Tones as the winning-most club in the Division. In the mens competition, the Vancouver Harps played some great football and though the Albertan sides really put it up to them, they did enough to win the title by a commanding and deserved margin.

It was great to see the Lethbridge, AB, contingent in town, and their players provided great support to Red Deer Eire Og’s cause. Red Deer were competitive in all their fixtures, and effectively ended the challenge of the spirited Vancouver Celts with their victory over the only club younger than theirs in the Western Canada Division. Stephen Agnew produced a powerhouse display for Eire Og scoring a cracking hat-trick of goals to ensure a victory for the home side.

Calgary Chieftains and Edmonton Wolfe Tones renewed rivalries in the final game of the 2010 Championship with the Wolfe Tones victory providing a small consolation for the 2009 Champions.

Saturday night’s event at the Westerner was memorable with Sean Smith providing a brief and enlightening summary of the career of Edmonton and Co. Louth Great, Jack Bell. Jack, a stalwart of the Wolfe Tones, died in March 2010, and the Gaelic community in Western Canada will miss his presence. The Bell family were on hand to accept from the Canadian County Board’s secretary, John O’Flynn, a Louth jersey in commemoration of his services to the County.

A special presentation was also made by John O’Flynn to the Lavery and Lynch families of Red Deer in recognition of their efforts in founding a GAA club in Red Deer. A recently published book called Lest We Forget that chronicles the lives of the seven founders of the GAA in Ireland and in particular, Joseph P. Ryan who is buried in Cranbrook BC, was presented to each family amid grateful applause.

Germaine Gibbons presents the Tom Gibbon’s Memorial trophy to the Vancouver Harps’ Ladies captain, Helen Keohane. (Photo courtesy of Vancouvers Harps).

Later in the evening, Germaine Gibbons was on hand to present the Tom Gibbon’s Memorial trophy to the Vancouver Harps’ Ladies captain, Helen Keohane. Germaine’s husband and the late Tom Gibbon’s son, Liam Gibbons, sadly, passed away last winter. Liam’s vibrant personality will be fondly remembered by all who knew him in Vancouver.

Sunday’s fixtures were playedin brilliant sunshine and again the Battle of Alberta, between Calgary and Edmonton, produced a cracking tussle. Even a score-board malfunction couldn’t deny a rejuvenated Chieftain team, and they produced the goals that mattered to take a 2-7 to 1-8 victory. The Ladies played a friendly challenge to round out the game-play, but the first official Red Deer Ladies title went to the Vancouver Harps. Back in the Men’s competition, it was the Harps, led by Mikey Harnett, who first dispatched Red Deer, and then the Chieftains, to complete a sweep of tournament titles in 2010.
On behalf of all the visiting teams, the Western Canada Division and the Canadian County Board offers special thanks to Red Deer’s Eire Og’s Tournament committee and the Titans RFC in Red Deer, for a job well done.

John O’Flynn

Of the ten teams in this competition two did not make it through to the Playoffs this year – Brocach and Ale House – these two will now battle it out for the MHC Shield. Brocach though went down fighting as they overcame a dogged Slim’s by four points in a very exciting contest but it was their overall record that cost. The Irish Pub meanwhile, needed to beat McBob’s to make the ‘Playoff’s and they managed to do just but nearly came a cropper when after building up a huge 15 point lead at the break, they allowed McBob’s back into the game and after falling behind by two points nearing the end, they needed a last minute goal to stave off a nightmare defeat. To tell us about those games is MHC’s, Karen Fink.

In senior football, Wolfe Tones heading the table, crossed swords with Armagh Notre Dame who needed a result to keep their hopes of adding senior honours to their Intermediate crown of last year. In a fascinating contest that ebbed one way then another, Armagh ND grabbed a late point to secure a merited draw in a game that both sides could have won and lost. In the other big football clash yesterday, another nailbiter saw Aidan McAnespies and ‘09 champs St Christopher’s battle to another draw on a scoreline 1-14 (17) each. In senior hurling, championship leaders Tipp had a comprehensive win over Galway, however, Cork pulled off the shock of the weekend, if not the season, when beating last year’s runners up and NACB champions, Wexford.
To tell us all about the weekend’s action is Boston GAA reporter, Rory O’Donnell.

The four day tournament which began last Thursday July 29, saw Boys and Girls U8 – U18 compete in hurling, football and camogie, in teams from Canada and London, who joined New York and North American Board clubs, to participate in this the biggest underage GAA championships outside of Ireland.
Some of the big winners were San Francisco teams who won four titles, along with good wins for New York, and, Rockland NY who captured three titles. In the Inter County U18 football championship between New York, London and NAB, North America took the title off London with a one point win. NY GAA reporter Eugene Kyne reports on some of the finals action he saw yesterday and gave his overall impression of this tournament which he said attracted major local interest. ( No senior action in Gaelic Park this weekend).

Once more Mother Nature has put the kibosh on GAA fixtures around the world. Last weekend saw the good folks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin having to cancel their games due to flooding, a week later it’s the turn of the Ozzie brigade as their 5th and final round of the NSW Championships in Sydney was cancelled today also because of flooding. Heavy rain all this week made Mono Park unplayable as the pitch was heavily waterlogged.

Les francais goin’ about their business last weekend in the southern French city of Toulouse, were taken by surprise as a new sport had just taken a bow in their ville…Beach Gaelique! New GAA club Tolosa Gaels (Toulouse Gaels, formed this year), took on the job of introducing both Gaelic football and Beach Gaelique to the uninitiated with a mini tournament between Tolouse and Lyons. Here are excerpts from Toulouse Gaels President, Guillaume Kerrien’s report.

Beach Gaelique action at Toulouse Plage, Toulose, France. (Photo by Guillaume Kerrien).

Beach Gaelique
Guillaume Kerrien
From July 19th to 25th, Tolosa Gaels proposed a new activity to people at Toulouse Plage : Beach Gaelic Football ! This was an excellent week where the club could show how dynamic our members are, after only a few months in existance. A big thanks to all those who took part in the event.

From Monday to Friday, youth initiations were organised in the afternoon on the beach soccer/rugby pitch of Toulouse Plage. Guillaume Kerrien, Clément Chiesa, Jean-Michel Cancet et Stephen Duffy made young people from 8 to 15 years old, discover what is behind the ‘fist pass’, ’solo’, ‘tackle’, etc. Most of people initiated did not know anything about the GAA. This was an event to showcase the games we love and its strong appeal .
The weekend was dedicated to welcoming Lyon and the coaching of adults. But in fact, succombing to huge demand, we were happy to organise a match for 15 kids, as the final match of our crazy week.

On Saturday and Sunday afternoon, after exhibition games, people from Toulouse and even tourists, were invited to discover Beach Gaelic Football on the sand-field of Toulouse Plage.
After some technical drills, we had these players in a surprising admiration for the sport we were introducing to anyone passing.
Regarding Beach Gaelic, there was no bounce, and a simpler pick-up. But for the rest, the rules did not change and were easy to adapt on the field. The playing facilities were ideal, consisting of inflated goalposts and beach soccer balls. Lyon and Toulouse also played on the grass on sunday morning, with a 11-aside game.

Challenge:Toulouse v Lyon
Saturday, Beach Gaelic 4×10min : Toulouse 12/11 (47) – Lyon 8-10 (34)

Tolouse and Lyon Beach Gaelique Footbal teams at Tolouse Plage. (Photo by Guillaume Kerrien).

After a first quarter of both teams discovering how to play on the sand, the game went quicker with each minute, and Tolosa Gaels pulled away in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Even if Lyon did get back in to it in the last quarter with very good scores, Tolosa always had that luxury of a good lead . In the end, this turned out to be a very entertaining and end to end game, with lots of scores and fun of course. Beach Gaelic is tiring, because of playing in the sand, and a good turn-out of both teams enabled a pleasant game for all spectators throughout the hour.

Sunday, Beach Gaelic 2×15min : Toulouse 4/8 (20) – Lyon 7/7 (28)
Twogames in the week-end, not enough! Both teams played a second game of Beach Gaelic on sunday, shorter but as explosive as the first one! This time, Lyon won the important duels on the field, resulting in quality goals and fine passages of play.

Sunday evening, all said their tired goodbyes but without doubt, everyone acknowledged the tremendous success the weekend was for both clubs!
This was a great opportunity to promote GAA sports, and also to recruit new people for the coming season. With trainings set to recommence in late August, we hope that these people will come and take a more keen interest to play and become a part of our club and strong spirit. But for sure the participants of Toulouse Plage enjoyed their Gaelic experience on the sand!

NOTE: No report from Milwaukee this week as last weekend’s games got rained out, while London GAA report will be back next week after London officials trip to the CYC in New York.
