Indy Hurling to be part of Super Bowl

Promo opps don’t come much bigger in the US and Indianapolis GAA may have hit the Super Jackpot.
The Indy GAA Club have been asked by the Super Bowl Committee to be a part of The Super Bowl Village the week before the big game! The theme of the day is “Super Sports” and there will be many local teams showcasing their sports and activities.The club will be showcasing Gaelic Sports by running training drills, providing a hitting cage to test out skills, and asking for as much crowd participation as possible.

The event takes place on Tuesday, January 31st, at the Super Bowl Village in Downtown Indianapolis.

Based in Swatragh in County Derry, P O Kane Hurls is a member of the Irish Guild of Ash Hurley Makers, an elite set of 50 members who produce hurls for the top hurlers around the country and globe.

To mark the occasion, GaelicSportsCast features P O Kane Hurls in a podcast outlining the fascinating story of how Pat O Kane’s lifelong passion for hurling and camogie, steered him on retirement to begin and craft the art of hurley making.

He began by making hurls by hand for his beloved champion camogie club Swatragh but word spread of the quality of his work; demand grew and soon he was supplying hurling and camogie clubs, schools and colleges throughout Ireland and indeed to clubs worldwide.

Pat’s son Gabriel, who along with a dedicated team of staff, works with his father in the business and in this special episode of GaelicSportsCast, he tells about the process involved in making a hurl and recounts the P O Kane Hurls story.

North American Championships start today

This morning Sept 3, at Gaelic Park, Chicago we have the start of the three day North American GAA Championships. Teams from all across America and Canada will gather for the annual national playoffs to decide who should be crowned North American champions for 2010.
It promises to be the biggest yet in terms of participation as the weekend’s championships sees 78 teams from 22 cities competing in some 90 games. The Vancouver’s Junior A hurlers, will be competing for the first time in a generation and will be hoping to bring a trophy back to the north west of Canada.

Chicago last hosted the games back in 2007 and the mammoth organisational task for the local committee will see games played at the main playing facility at Gaelic Park as well as at five additional fields at the GAA complex.
The American GAA Championships is set to attract over 6000 people to this Labour Day weekend event and the stage is set for a feast of Gaelic football, hurling and camogie.

Boston and Chicago schedules hit by weather

Last week saw Sydney and Chicago having to postpone their GAA schedules, and while Sydney luckily got the first round of the NSW Championship up and running this past weekend, heavy rain once more was responsible for the cancellation of games at Gaelic Park in Chicago. This is the second weekend in a row that Chicago has been hit with heavy rains and the postponements will test the resolve of the local GAA to get all fixtures played before ‘Playoff deadlines in September. To make matters worse, Boston joined the ranks suffering weather blues as the second round of the North East Championships had to be called off at the GAA playing fields in Canton, MA because of …yes…flooding !! New York may deem themselves extremely fortunate to get a full card in over the weekend as for the most part the bad weather steered clear of Gaelic Park.
Here’s hoping that Boston can return to action this week and that the folks in Chicago have luck on their side and be able to get the Chicago Championship up and running. And, as soon as Gaelic Park in Chicago returns to action, GaelicSportsCast for the first time this year, will be reporting on the action in the windy city all through the summer.

The Boston Northeast GAA season kicks into full swing this week as the 2010 Championship gets underway this weekend in Canton, Massachusetts. In the Mens Senior Football Championship all eyes will be on last year’s and first time champions St Christophers to see if they can replicate their brilliant ’09 form. In the Hurling Championship, kingpins Tipperary will be looking to once again be in the shake-up come playoff time in late August. Then in Ladies Football, it will be very interesting to see if Tir na N’og can repeat last year’s great triumph when they took their very first Northeast title. Here to tell GaelicSportsCast about each teams chances ahead of the ‘Championship throw-in is long time Boston GAA reporter, Rory O’Donnell, who, will be giving us weekly reports throughout the summer on all the action from Canton.

League champs ‘Cusacks triumph over Shamrocks

In the big clash of the day in Mono Park, Sydney last Sunday, we had a repeat of last year’s Hurling League final when Sydney Shamrocks and Michael Cusacks went at it one more time. In 2009 Cusack’s came out seven point winners but it was a much closer affair this time with the ‘Champs goal scoring prowess the difference when edging it by two points on a scoreline of 3-8 (17) to 1-12 (15).
‘Cusacks (9) who are three for three, now top the table with Shamrocks on 7 points. In the other hurling game Naobh Padraig had five to spare over Central Coast – 4-9 (21) to 3-7 (16).
In Mens Football, with a game advantage, Young Irelands went top of the table when they drew with ’09 runners-up, Penrith Gaels 0-8 each while Cormac McAnallens continue their recent good form with a three point win over Clan naGael.
In Camogie (ladies hurling), ‘McAnallens maintained their second from the top spot with a hard fought four point win over Craobh Padraig while last year’s champs Central Coast who lie in third spot had a similar margin to spare over ‘Cusacks.

The New South Wales (NSW) GAA League in Sydney is heating up nicely as several attractive clashes last weekend in the Mens Senior Football saw some entertaining fare on offer. Cormac McAnallens received a boost when coming out two point winners over last year’s League champions, Michael Cusacks, in their second game of the season. Another close affair was the game between 2009 Championship winners, Young Irelands and Clan NaGael, with ‘Irelands just getting there in the end with a one point win. ‘Cusacks and ‘Irelands top the table on 7pts each with McAnallen’s on 4, Clan Na Gael and Penrith on 3 each with the latter three having played two games to date.
No hurling games were down for decision last Sunday and after two rounds, ‘Cusacks and Sydney Shamrocks lead the way on 6pts a piece. In Camogie, Clan NaGael continue to impress and top the table while in Ladies Football there is no stopping Central Coast.
