Going into the last round of the regular ‘Sevens schedule, Group A saw Murphy’s Law 7pm with a chance of joining The Garage out of their pool, however, they faced their Group leaders on Wednesday night and despite their early promise in the tournament were well beaten by a score of [24] 4-12 to [11] 3-2.
Darryl’s Demons was another side in with a chance to make the finals and they seized their opportunity with both hands with a comfortable win over Clonbony Wolfhounds.

In Group B meanwhile, Al’s A Team, The Gazelles and Marty Morrissey were all vying for that all important second spot and as it turned out Al’s’ and Marty’ were paired together in the final round and it was the Clare Cork combo that Marty’ himself would be proud that took the game on a scoreline of [11] 3-2 [3] 1-0.
The Gazelles however didn’t make the most of their chances when disappointing against lively Cu Chulainn Hounds.

So the semi finals placements for Sunday at Ian Galloway Park are:

Semi Final 1 – The Garage v Marty Morrissey
Semi Final 2 – Wheelbarrow Wheelers v Darryl’s Demons

Watch out for finals podcast on Sunday.

The 8th annual CYC saw some 100 teams in action at U8 through U18 from all across America, Canada, England and Ireland.
The first three days saw sunshine but finals day on Sunday saw rain yet it didn’t dampen spirits.

A significant development was the prominence of hurling and camogie during this championship with noticeable high skill levels and a good spread of winners.

New York hurling won titles at U8 and U14, with Boston winning at U10, San Francisco tops in U12 and St Jarlaith’s from Cleveland impressing with the U16 title.
In Camogie we had wins for Rockland, NY (U8), Boston U10 and San Francisco at U12 and U14.

The main events of the championship saw Premier football and hurling action with visitors Lancashire (UK) taking the Minor football title when beating New York by a point, while the Premier Minor ladies championship went to North America (NACB) who beat NY, also by the minimum.
In the Premier Football U16 final, New York had a comfortable win over NACB, however, N. America got their revenge with an impressive display in the Premier U16 hurling decider when ousting NY.

Elsewhere, regular football action saw good wins for Rockland at U8, U10, U12 in both boys and girls. In the U16 and U18 girls football finals, St Brigid’s of Chicago got the better of Boston.
Meanwhile, the Delco Gaels from Delaware impressed in winning the football U14 Boys A title; New York club St. Barnabas won U16 A, and Rockland took the U18 A championship.

There was tremendous atmosphere at all age level games for the four days with parents and relatives cheering on their teams and very much into the spirit of this growing North American GAA youth championship.

Northeast GAA PRO, Rory O’Donnell contributed to report.

That storied mens football club in Boston, Aidan McAnespies is putting in one hell of a senior football campaign this year as with three rounds left to play before the playoffs they are the only team to remain unbeaten and lead the Boston Northeast Football Championship.

McAnespies had a convincing win over arch rivals Donegal over the weekend, while in other action St Christophers had a good win over struggling Shannon Blues.
Second place Connemara Gaels were held to a draw by Kerry, and Galway had an important win over Mayo.

In the final game of the three game series in the Ladies Football Championship, last year’s champions Tir na nOg proved too strong once more for Boston Shamrocks and as a result of taking three out of three, Tir na nOg are crowned 2011 champions.

In hurling meanwhile, Fr Tom’s beat Galway in a thriller on Saturday while on Sunday, Boston Wexford held on to beat Tipperary.

In Junior C Hurling action Portland beat Worcester to go top of the table.

Here to fill us in on the latest from Boston is Northeast GAA PRO, Rory O’Donnell.

It was a fantastic day for Kilburn Gaels of London and the sport of hurling over the weekend as the London 2010 league and championship holders were crowned the winners of a terrific first ever international hurling tournament at Thurles on Saturday, July 9.

While Thurles Sarsfield and Tipp hero, the turbo charged Lar Corbett blazed a trail in Cork on Sunday afternoon, the day before at the spiritual home of the Munster final at an immaculate Semple Stadium, London’s Kilburn Gaels edged out gallant Meath side, Dunboyne in an entertaining tournament decider.

Trailing by two at half time, the London champions found their rythmn in the second period hitting five points on the trot and led by a point approaching the final whistle. A late equaliser for Dunboyne gave them hope but fittingly, London born player, Michael Dwyer had the final say for Kilburn when he put a placed ball between the posts to see his side take this first ever international hurling competition.

The Thurles Sarsfield hurling club were the organisers of the event that saw teams from Northern Ireland, Ireland and England compete all day long Saturday in brilliant sunshine at Dr Morris Park and at the Outside Field located beside fabled Semple Stadium in this town that gave birth to the GAA back in 1884.

The teams participating included six senior sides, Robert Emmetts (London), Dunboyne (Meath), Keady Lamh Dhearg’s (Armagh), Kilburn Gaels (London), Naomh Moninne (Louth), Naas (Kildare), intermediate outfit, Na Magha (Derry), and newcomers to hurling, the Lackenheath Wild Geese (USA).

Lackenheath are comprised uniquely of members of the US Air Force based at the Lackenheath Air Base, England who over the past two years have fallen under the spell of the ancient game, and while unable to secure a win, gained from the experience of their first ever club tournament in Ireland.

Listen here for brief post final comments by winning Kilburn Gaels manager, Tom Bergin and tournament runners-up Dunboyne manager, Paul Reilly .

It turned out to be a fantastic opening weekend for both European hurling and camogie last Saturday, as competitive games of a high standard was the order for Round 1 of this year’s European Hurling and Camogie Championship at the Hague, Holland.

The mens hurling decider between hosts Den Hague and Zurich was a thrilling final as the game went to Over Time with the locals narrowly coming away with a two point win.
In the Camogie, Belgium A ladies out-goaled a gallant Paris side in another exciting final.

It was an early beginning for all last Saturday with the first games throwing in at 9.30 am in the morning and the temperature already hovering at 25 degrees.
The Mens competition format saw four teams play 4 x 15 minutes games, while in the Ladies five teams played 5 games of 12.5 minutes.

The hurling began with Belgium playing Luxembourg and after a close match, Belgium came out on top winning 0-8 to 0-4. Next Den Haag played Zurich, and quickly found out that this Zurich team were well up for it, with players performing like they had been training together all winter.
Den Haag’s backs were in trouble, a goal blitz ensued and it ended with a Zurich win [17] 4-5 to [12] 1-9, leaving hosts the Hague with a mountain to climb.
Next game was Den Haag versus Belgium. Den Haag knew they had to at least win their next two games to get to the final but it wouldn’t be easy against reigning champs, Belgium. Den Haag solved its problems in the back and secured a tight win, beating Belgium [8] 1-5 to [6] 1-3.
Up next, Luxembourg against the form team, Zurich. The Swiss outfit with natives in their side, won it in style [21] 2-15 to [[8] 0-8; the result confirming their favourite status. Next Zurich and Belgium played, this was a crunch tie for Belgium, as they had to win to have any chance of reaching the final.
Belgium trailed by a point at half time, however a goal late in the second period gave Belgium the win [8] 1-05 to [7] 0-7.
Den Haag had the fortunate situation of knowing they now had to beat Luxembourg by at least 6 points to secure a place in the final. The Hague’s coach for the day Sean Simpson, wisely didn’t tell the players the amount they had to win by and only let them know at the end of the game.
There was little to fear however as they ran out comfortable winners. Belgium went on to win 3rd place playoff against Luxembourg.
The final saw Den Haag and Zurich square off once again.
Zurich started better and kept a lead for most of the game, however, with a minute to go and Den Haag 4 points down, a goal from Shane O’ Sullivan followed by a point from Noel Dillon, saw the hosts grab a 2-8 draw and extra time. Zurich got on the board first with a goal, but the Hague boys dug deep and scored 5 points in the second period of extra time to deny an unlucky Zurich.

It's all action around the Luxembourg (red-blue) square as Zurich pile on the pressure in a game at Rd 1 of the European Camogie Championship. (Photo by Jeroen Tibbe).

The Ladies Camogie was the big surprise, not only because they had more teams than the men for the first time in European hurling history, but also because the standard was of an order higher than ever witnessed before.

The Paris ladies looked the team to beat as they went unbeaten in the early rounds. Going well aslo was Belgium A early on and both Paris and Belgium met in the final.
In a highly skilled and exciting match, the Belgium Ladies percevered by a goal on a scoreline of [22] 6-4 to [19] 5-4.

Chairman of Den Hague GAA, Mathew Morris pleased with the tournament outcome, said afterwards that the hurling was very competitive and very little separates the teams in the championship. He also said that the ladies tournament success could point to uncharted waters for the future.

“I was delighted with the tournament, because all hurling teams were only a puck of the ball away from winning on the day, which means that there is competition now between all teams, which can only be good for European hurling.
“The Camogie was also of a really high standard and will overtake the men’s if it keeps going this way. I would also like to thank the referees for there hard work all day in that heat,” The Hague chairman said.

One of the strongest senior football clubs in Boston, if not America, Aidan McAnespies showed again why they are a force as they crushed Boston Wolfe Tones last Sunday to take the first US Northeast competition of the season, the O’Brien Cup.

The ‘Tones had been putting in some impressive performances early on in the young season and looked like they could continue that form in last Sunday’s Cup decider. However, ‘McAnespies in a final are always hard to beat and so it turned out last week when they ran out comfortable seven point winners on a scoreline of [22] 0-22 to [15] 1-12.

Wolfe Tones got off to a flyer though when grabbing a goal in the opening minute but that was as good as it got as McAnespies proceeded to run riot hitting no less than 11 points on the trot without a response from the shell shocked ‘Tones. At the half, McAnespies led by almost double scores 0-13 to [7] 1-04.
Wolfe Tones did manage to get back in the game and slowly pegged back the lead to 3, however McAnespies kicked on once more and were never troubled again.

In hurling, the second round of the Sheehan Cup saw a reversal of fortunes for Tipperary. They had crashed heavily last time out to Wexford but against Galway on Sunday they were back on song and full value for their 11 point [21] 0-21 to [10] 1-07 victory.
After a close first half with Tipp leading by 4, they upped the anti in the second half and Galway just could not follow suit.

In the other Sheehan Cup second round, Wexford continued their good early form with an easy victory over [24] 2-18 to Fr Tom Burkes [11] 1-08 and they now sit top of the table.
A goal midway through the first half saw Wexford build a deserved five point lead at the break. Tom’s put in a better showing in the second half though as they reduced the deficit to a goal early on. But Wexford responded well with a succession of points before a second goal sealed the deal and ran out 13 point winners in the end.

NOTE: No podcast with report. Weekly Boston podcast from next week.

Back in Ireland after GaelicSportsCast visit to France last week, today’s podcast brings you a full report on the 4th Round of the League Bretagne/Brittany, which was held last Saturday in the beautiful French city of Nantes.
Playing 11 a-side, three teams - Guerande, Liffré and hosts Nantes (Rennes withdrawal) battled it out in hot afternoon sun at Stade du Petit Breton on the outskirts of the city where family, friends and even local onlookers came to watch this new sport of Football Gaelique.
North of Nantes, on the same day along the Atlantic coast at St Brieuc, there was another four team tournament taking place as part of the League’s 4th Round and so with just a 5th and final round of matches left to play, last weekend’s result could prove crucial.

In pole position before Saturday was four time ‘League winners and last year’s champions, the all French side of Liffré and after a great battle with Nantes (some Irish) in their first game and an easier victory over Guerande (all French) in their second match, Liffré were crowned tournament and 2011 League Champions.
Nantes fielded five Irish students in the game versus Liffré and after a great start when opening up a 2 goals and 2 points (8) to 0-2 lead. However, they came under pressure in the middle of the field where the impressive Phillipe Cornilleau and Olivier Kowarski took control for the visitors.
Liffré pulled it back to a one point deficit at the break but a goal rush by Nantes after the restart saw the champions now behind by 11 points. However, they didn’t panic and soon began to overrun Nantes hitting the net four times to soon draw level. With minutes left in the game they added another 1-1 to take a fantastic victory where never-say die attitude was clearly on show.
This podcast includes live moments from the tournament, sounds of the day, reports on the games and interviews (English and French translations) on and off the field with club officials, and, a representative from a Nantes student sporting body.

Based in Swatragh in County Derry, P O Kane Hurls is a member of the Irish Guild of Ash Hurley Makers, an elite set of 50 members who produce hurls for the top hurlers around the country and globe.

To mark the occasion, GaelicSportsCast features P O Kane Hurls in a podcast outlining the fascinating story of how Pat O Kane’s lifelong passion for hurling and camogie, steered him on retirement to begin and craft the art of hurley making.

He began by making hurls by hand for his beloved champion camogie club Swatragh but word spread of the quality of his work; demand grew and soon he was supplying hurling and camogie clubs, schools and colleges throughout Ireland and indeed to clubs worldwide.

Pat’s son Gabriel, who along with a dedicated team of staff, works with his father in the business and in this special episode of GaelicSportsCast, he tells about the process involved in making a hurl and recounts the P O Kane Hurls story.

It was a very special weekend for Rockland GAA, NY as yesterday saw the final of this year’s FBD Football League take place to mark the official opening of their brand new Centre of Excellence facilities located just north of Manhattan. The game saw New York up against title holders and visiting team from the west of Ireland, County Mayo. New York got off to a slow start as Mayo raced into an early 0-5 lead, however, a series of pointed frees got the home side back in contention and in their best period of the game, New York had it back to all square at the interval on 0-6 apiece. New York continued to impress in the early part of the second half when taking a one point lead, but that was as good as it got for the Big Apple as Mayo, showing greater tactical awareness and renewed spirit, soon regained the lead to take control and pushed on for an emphatic 0-19 to 0-7 victory. In the Ladies Inter County Football All Star game, a talented New York side proved a bridge too far for North America with a comfortable 3-18 (27) to 0-04 win, while in a five team, four city 7 aside Camogie tournament on Saturday in Gaelic Park, New York edged out rivals Boston by 2-03 (9) to 1-02 (5). Here to tell us about all the weekend’s action is NY GAA reporter, Eugene Kyne.

Last weekend at Pairc na h Eireann in Birmingham we had semi final action to decide this year’s Warwickshire senior hurling championship final pairing. It turned out to be a disappointing day for neutrals as easy wins was the order of the day.
Manchester’s Fullen Gaels had a very comfortable time in their semi final against Erin Go Bragh as they scored at will to run out 1-19 (22) to 0-05 winners. Indeed, things got worse for the second semi final as local champion’s John Mitchell’s strolled past Coventry on a scoreline of 6-15 to 0-07. However, it wasn’t all one way traffic in the second semi final of this year’s Warwickshire intermediate football championship when we saw Wolverhampton’s St Mary’s take on Coventry side, St Finbarrs. This one was close all through and just when it looked like St Mary’s might get the win, a late goal from St Finbarrs secured a draw. The replay takes place in Pairc na hEireann next Sunday, October 3rd. In the other intermediate football semi final, it was a case of another one sided affair with John Mitchells proving too strong for St Brendan’s of Manchester’s when winning by 2-15 (21) to 0-07.

The other semi was a much closer affair with Treacy’s goalkeeper, Michael Walsh stellar between the posts. His side showed great spirit and determination nearing the final stages as they edged in front and held on for a 2-13 (19) to 1-14 (17) victory. In the two intermediate hurling semi finals, young club Michael Cusacks were too strong for Clann Na Gael on a scorline of 3-17 (26) to 1-7 (10),while Bros Pearse in another exciting encounter, outgunned Thomas McCurtains by 2-09 (15) 2-07 (13). Here to tell us all about the games is London GAA Chairman, Tommy Harrell.

The first match of the day saw an epic between the number 1 and 2 seeds in the intermediate final, however, there simply was no seperating these two and they finished Armagh 2-12 (18) to Mayo’s 0-18 (OT). The rematch should be another nail biter tonight, Tuesday in Gaelic Park.
Leitrim and Down were level at half time in their game but a goal by Dan Doona mid way through the second half sent Leitrim on their way. Down weren’t helped in their comeback efforts when they found themselves minus a player and lost their title on a scoreline of 2-09 (15) to 2-05 (11). In the other senior semi final, a sluggish start for Cork saw them open up in the second period and go on to dominate opponents Cavan in a final score of 0-14 to 0-06.
The Senior Football Championship Final between Leitrim and Cork is set for next Sunday, Oct 3 at 4pm.

It turned out to be a great weekend for Gulf region teams in this year’s 2010 Asian Gaelic Games in Hong Kong as two of their teams, who had made the long trek, got to meet in the premier event, the Derek Brady mens football cup final. Dubai had led the group standings after Day 1 yesterday with final opponents Qatar next in line. In the final a couple of hours ago, Dubai edged out their neighbours by 1-07 (10) to 1-04 (7) to take the cup back to the desert sands. In the mens hurling final, China took the honours by a slender point when beating Singapore/Vietnam while in the Ladies A Football Final, Singapore enjoyed a comprehensive win over Seoul Gaels.

There was also plenty of action at the intermediate grade with two semi finals on offer. The first saw Mayo record a very comfortable win over Astoria Gaels where undoubtedly the star of the show, if not the day, was Gerry O’Boyle whose 4 goals and 4 points helped Mayo into this year’s final. The other semi saw number one seed, Armagh run out easy 8 point victors over Dublin. Here to tell us about all the action is New York GAA reporter, Eugene Kyne.

In one of the best football games all season at Gaelic Park in New York, fans were on the edge of their seats as a fantastic senior quarter final duel between Cavan and Tyrone spilled into OT. Cavan player James Moynagh was the hero for his side as he not only saved his team from defeat with a late equalising point in normal time but also stepped up to grab the winner at the death in OT. Meanwhile, in the other quarter final between Leitrim and Kerry, a close contest saw a second half Leitrim goal make all the difference and help them to a four point victory. Leitrim’s win sets up a repeat of last year’s semi final clash with champions Down, while Cavan will play Cork in the other semi final with both games fixed for Sept 26.
There was also plenty of action at the junior grade with two semi finals on Sunday’s card. In the first, Donegal’s late 1-3 blitz saw them home against Cavan while in the other semi final, a brilliant second half performance by Monaghan proved the difference against St Raymond’s. To fill us in on all the action is New York GAA reporter, Eugene Kyne.

In a nailing biting conclusion to the first round of this year’s European Mens Senior Football Championship in Munich, Germany last Saturday, it took a last minute goal by 2009 champs, The Hague to deny their great rivals Paris Gaels in this three round pan Europe competition. In the Shield, Jersey with a comfortable win proved too strong for Frankfurt, while all French side from Brittany, St Malo put in a great showing finishing in 3rd spot, and notably, taking a couple of Irish team scalps along the way. In the Ladies European football race, it was the Belgium side who once again took top honours when beating Paris in the final, and now leading going into the 6th of seven rounds, look to have all but clinched their third title in a row.

Player of the Tournament awards went to former Kerry county ladies star, Grainne Ní Flaharta (Belgium- ladies); Michael McAnea (Paris Gaels – Chp) and Mark O’Shea (Jersey – Shield)

Host club Munich Colmcilles was commended for the excellent tournament organisation and afterwards, the 200+ players and supporters enjoyed a typical meal in the Augustiner Brauhouse, Munich’s oldest brewery dating back to 1328.
To tell us about the tournament GaelicSportsCast spoke with European GAA Board official and referee, Mike Cryan, and, Paris Gaels player, Darren Lovely.

It was quarter finals day for New York junior and intermediate footballers last Sunday at Gaelic Park in the Bronx. The most exciting game of the day was the second intermediate quarter final between Dublin and Kerry. In an 8 goal thriller, Dublin looked to be pulling away in the second period, however, 14 man NY Kerry produced a brilliant rally with four second half goals, but, in the end the Dubs held on for a one point win. They now play Armagh in their semi final in two weeks time. The other intermediate quarter final saw Astoria Gaels prove too much for Brooklyn/Long Island, and, Astoria will now play Mayo in the second semi final. In the two junior quarters, where young American born players featured prominently, St Raymond’s beat St Barnabas, while Cavan edged NY Celtics.
