It’s a fantastic night for the Indy Hurling club and the sport of hurling tonight as the game is showcased to thousands of Super Bowls fans at the Super Bowl Village.

Indy hurling is putting on a great show with basic drills and a hitting cage and football fans of all ages are having a go.

Gaelic Football coaching app to be launched in December by Elevate Sports Solutions.

The world of coaching and performance analysis is becoming an increasing feature of Gaelic Sports across Ireland and on the international GAA scene.

Coaches are putting a huge amount of time and effort into the development of teams and athletes and a new company, Elevate Sports Solutions based in Derry, Northern Ireland, this December is launching a unique set of coaching tools and services that could well have a significant impact on the development of coaching Gaelic Sports.

Elevate Sports Solutions is set to launch next week the first of two resources for coaches – Gaelic Football Coaching Cards, and one of the first of its kind in the world of GAA – Gaelic Football Coaching Apps for iPhone, iPad and Android.
The company also specializes in fundamentals, coaching strategies and offers an Elite Level Performance Analysis service.

San Francisco GAA had the honor of hosting this year’s Nationals where over three days from Sept 2-4 at their new facilities at Treasure Island, teams from all across America and Canada gathered for men’s and ladies’ football, hurling, and camogie competition in an impressive 95 games.

In Podcast 1 we look back on all the action with Northeast GAA PRO, Rory O’Donnell and Canada GAA Secretary, John O’Flynn, who give their perspective on their respective regions and teams performances.

2011 NACB Finals Results

The event is being hosted this year by San Francisco GAA at their new facility, Pairc na nGael at Treasure Island and over the next three days some 85 teams from all across America will be joined by their neighbors, Canada for a festival of hurling, mens football, ladies football and camogie.

In today’s podcast we take a look at the representation from Canada when talking with Canada GAA Secretary, John Flynn , and also chat with North American GAA PRO, Tim Flanagan about the event, the teams and what it means for participants.

The 8^th annual CYC saw some 100 teams in action at U8 through U18 from all across America, Canada, England and Ireland.
The first three days saw sunshine but finals day on Sunday saw rain yet it didn’t dampen spirits.

A significant development was the prominence of hurling and camogie during this championship with noticeable high skill levels and a good spread of winners.

New York hurling won titles at U8 and U14, with Boston winning at U10, San Francisco tops in U12 and St Jarlaith’s from Cleveland impressing with the U16 title.
In Camogie we had wins for Rockland, NY (U8), Boston U10 and San Francisco at U12 and U14.

The main events of the championship saw Premier football and hurling action with visitors Lancashire (UK) taking the Minor football title when beating New York by a point, while the Premier Minor ladies championship went to North America (NACB) who beat NY, also by the minimum.
In the Premier Football U16 final, New York had a comfortable win over NACB, however, N. America got their revenge with an impressive display in the Premier U16 hurling decider when ousting NY.

Elsewhere, regular football action saw good wins for Rockland at U8, U10, U12  in both boys and girls. In the U16 and U18 girls football finals, St Brigid’s of Chicago got the better of Boston.
Meanwhile, the Delco Gaels from Delaware impressed in winning the football U14 Boys A title; New York club St. Barnabas won U16 A, and Rockland took the U18 A championship.

There was tremendous atmosphere at all age level games for the four days with parents and relatives cheering on their teams and very much into the spirit of this growing North American GAA youth championship.

This 8^th annual Continental Youth Championships (CYC) started early this morning and over the next four days will see some 100 teams from all across America, including New York and Canada with invited teams from England and Ireland all in action.

This tournament is the showpiece for underage GAA youth development in North America and will see competition in all four codes from U8 through U18.

It takes a mammoth task to organize this event each year which is expected to attract 2,000 participants and thousands of spectators to this growing tournament.

To get a feel for the scale of the four day event, we here from Boston Northeast Games Development Administrator (GDA), Mike Moynihan and Northeast GAA PRO, Rory O’Donnell.

After stormy weather had interrupted Day 1 late Saturday evening, Sunday morning saw Indy account for Purdue in Game 3 on a scoreline of [18] 3-09 to [11] 2-05.

The win meant an Indiana v Cal Berkeley ‘Championship Game and here to tell us about the historic first college hurling final is sports reporter, Coilin Duffy in Chicago.

In Game 1 of a seven-side round robbin format in the historic competition, UC Berkeley from California, took on Indiana University and in an exciting game, the midwest team of Indy edged home by a single point [17] 3-08 to [16] 4-04.

More pulsating action followed in Game 2 where Cal Berkeley battled Purdue. This game went to Over Time and in deteriorating conditions the game ended in a draw [20] 3-11 each.

The birth of hurling at US college level has slowly been taking place over the past 3 years on America’s West Coast, particularly in California, and, over this past year on campuses across states of the Midwest. 

This weekend, hurling as an American college sport, takes a huge step forward with the organisation of the inaugural National College Hurling Championships at Gaelic Park, Chicago, where teams from UC Berkeley in California take on Purdue and Indiana from the Midwest.

Also, there will also be a series of East v West competition with a mix of college players from Stanford, UC Davis and other western colleges, taking on an eastern selection that will include hurlers from University of Minnesota, University of Pittsburg, University of Akron, and Ohio State.

Based in Swatragh in County Derry, P O Kane Hurls is a member of the Irish Guild of Ash Hurley Makers, an elite set of 50 members who produce hurls for the top hurlers around the country and globe.

To mark the occasion, GaelicSportsCast features P O Kane Hurls in a podcast outlining the fascinating story of how Pat O Kane’s lifelong passion for hurling and camogie, steered him on retirement to begin and craft the art of hurley making.

He began by making hurls by hand for his beloved champion camogie club Swatragh but word spread of the quality of his work; demand grew and soon he was supplying hurling and camogie clubs, schools and colleges throughout Ireland and indeed to clubs worldwide.

Pat’s son Gabriel, who along with a dedicated team of staff, works with his father in the business and in this special episode of GaelicSportsCast, he tells about the process involved in making a hurl and recounts the P O Kane Hurls story.

Last year’s 2009 San Francisco Mens Senior Football champions, Ulster will take on their great rivals Sean Treacy’s to decide this year’s championship.  Over the last two rounds, there were wins for Sean Treacys over the SF Celts, Sons of Boru over the Celts while Ulster topped ’Treacy’s and drew with ‘Boru. In the last and final round next Tues and Wed, ‘Boru and the Celts will battle it out with the other two to decide third spot and an Intermediate final placing. Meanwhile, in senior hurling Na Fianna kept the series alive when edging Naomh Padraig by a point and their next clash will decide the 2010 hurling championship. San Francisco GAA Results Rounds 4 & 5, July 21-27, 2010

Last weekend, Fog City Harps added another Ladies Senior Football Championship crown to their long and growing number of San Francisco titles. The recent St Patrick’s Cup winners once again proved too much to handle for Na Saoirse when easing to a 2-14 (20) to 0-02 victory. Fog City will now go on to defend their North American County Board (NACB) title in Chicago this September. In mens senior hurling, the title race heats up as Naomh Padraig moved a step closer to capturing this year’s championship with a 3-11 (20) to 1-8 (11) over Na Fianna. Can they be stopped? Meanwhile in mens senior football, ill discipline got in the way of football as no less than four players were sent off in the two games over the weekend. In Sean Treacys three goal win over ‘Boru, both teams had players sent off with ‘Treacy’s losing one while ‘Boru lost two. The other game between Ulster and SF Celts, saw the Ulster side lose a man to a straight red with the game ending in dramatic fashion as the Celts came back to grab a draw with a controversial goal at the death. Here to tell us all about the weekends events is San Fran GAA Registrar, Andrew Brennan.

San Francisco GAA Results Weekend of July 11, 2010

After a schedule break the prior week, San Francisco GAA was back in action last weekend with a full list of fixtures at Treasure Island. In Mens Senior Football, an improving SF Celts side had an impressive victory over Sons of Boru, while rivals Ulster and Sean Treacy’s went at it again with the 2009 champions, SF Ulster, this time overturning their recent St Patrick’s Cup defeat by beating Treacys  by two points. Meanwhile, in the first round of Mens Senior Hurling Naomh Padraig after a tight opening half, secured the victory when they used an extra man to their advantage as Na Fianna had a man sent to the line. While in Ladies Football Fog City Harps continue their winning ways with a comfortable win over rivals ‘Saoirse.  Reporting on all the action is San Fran GAA Registrar, Andrew Brennan.

San Francisco GAA Results Weekend of June 27, 2010

Last weekend saw the first round of the San Francisco Championship get under way. In the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge at Treasure Island, the footballers were first into action with the recent St Patrick’s Cup victors, Sean Treacys waisting no time getting back to winning ways as they overcame the Celts on Saturday afternoon. Goals made all the difference in this one. Their opponents in the ‘Cup final and last year’s champions, Ulster also got their campaign off on the right foot as they scored a comfortable win over Sons of Boru. In Ladies Senior Footbal on Sunday, those eternal rivals Fog City Harps and Na Saoirse went head-to-head again with the former franking their recent ‘Cup victory. San Francisco GAA Results Weekend of June 13, 2010

After a break in the San Francisco GAA schedule recently, things shifted into high gear last week and on the weekend when we had the semi finals and finals of the St Patrick’s Cup. San Francisco 2009 Mens Football Championship winners, Ulster defeated Sons of Boru to reach the ‘Patrick’s Cup final where arch rivals Sean Treacys lay in wait. The final on Sunday, a repeat of last year’s championship clash, produced another thriller with ‘Treacys gaining revenge for last summer’s defeat to take their first ever title in this competition. In another exciting game on Saturday, Na Fianna, San Francisco 2009 Hurling Champions proved 4 points too good for the early form team, Naomh Padraig, while in the Ladies Football final, San Fran and North American heroines, Fog City Harps were too strong for Saoirse.  Back to tell us all about the St Patrick Cup finals is San Francisco GAA Registrar, Andrew Brennan.
