Founded just three short years ago, the club affiliated to the New York GAA Minor Board, set out from the start to broaden the scope of the player base beyond the Irish American community and introduce Gaelic football to mainstream America.

This strategy has worked wonders for the promotion of the sport in the region and to talk more about that and get an insight into Setanta’s beginnings, we speak today with founder member and Setanta GFC President, Jerry Padian.

The ‘Gaels club was founded back in the early part of the last decade as one of a new breed of young juvenile Gaelic football clubs in New York City.

The club after humble beginnings has put down solid Gaelic sporting roots in the Woodside, Sunnyside and Maspeth areas of Queens and today participates in the NY GAA Minor Board’s, Spring and Fall Leagues at U8 – U 14 grades. Shannon Gaels also compete in local tournaments and at the annual American Continental Youth Championships (CYC).

Primarily focusing on Gaelic football, the club recently introduced hurling to young players, while at the same time adults started another exciting adventure when forming a Junior hurling team this summer.

Here to talk about the early years, the day-to-day running of the club, and its hopes for the future is PRO, Richard Corridan.

Not only has it been a great year for Dublin GAA at home, it has also been a tremendous year for Dublin GFC in New York as last month’s win in the New York Intermediate Championship Final sees the NY Dub’s playing senior for the very first time since the club’s reformation back in the 1990s.

NY Dublin was originally founded back in the 1930s but a lean period in the late 80s put things on hold, however, the club was resurrected in 1995 and ever since has been going from strength to strength.

As part of GaelicSportsCast profile series of New York GAA clubs, we take our first look at the grassroots GAA scene in the Big Apple by exploring the history of the NY Dublin Gaelic Football Club with reformed founder member, Niall Rice, and treasurer, Jimmy Campbell.

As the players of NY Leitrim and Tyrone in contesting for the 2011 New York senior football championship left the field at Gaelic Park the Bronx yesterday afternoon, the large crowd gave the teams a standing ovation as they had just witnessed one of the greatest senior football finals in the city in years.

A fantastic game of football saw Leitrim edge out a very gallant Tyrone in the dying minutes of OT with Kerry native, Dan Doona sending over a brace of points to see the champions retain their title by [17] 0-17 to [15] 1-12.

But NY Tyrone had come oh so close to toppling the champions as they were leading by a point with virtually seconds left in normal time only to see Leitrim steal in for a late equalizer.

Here to give a full report on the final is NY GAA Secretary, Liam Bermingham, and, we also here from delighted Leitrim selector, Frankie Dwyer and NY GAA Chairman, Larry McCarthy on a thrilling final.

Listen here: 20:36

The place to be for followers of Gaelic sports in the ‘Big Apple’ was at Gaelic Park in the Bronx last weekend as this year’s New York Intermediate Football Championship was decided as well as the not so small matter of finding out what two teams would reach this year’s senior football championship final.

On Saturday, the Dubs and the Kingdom were at it again but this time on the other side of the Atlantic, and, in a thrilling Overtime struggle a pair of goals decided things once more in favor of the men in blue.

In the first senior football semi final on Sunday, table toppers Tyrone edged out last year’s intermediate champs, Armagh, while in the other semi final – in a repeat of last year’s final between NY Leitrim and NY Cork – champions Leitrim once more came out victors.

To fill us in on the weekends action and get perspectives from the respective winners, NY Dublin Treasurer, Jimmy Campbell talks about his side’s win, Tyrone Secretary, Seamus McNabb goes back over his club’s hard fought battle with Armagh, while Leitrim selector, Frankie Dwyer talks about his team’s second half performance against a good Cork team.

Later in the program we caught up with New York Ladies football team mentor and NY Games Development Officer, Simon Gillespie while waiting on a connector flight in Charlotte NC to La Guardia on his way home from New York’s drawn All Ireland Junior final in Croke Park on Sunday.
(Replay scheduled for Sunday Oct 9 @ 2.30 in Croke Park).

At Gaelic Park yesterday in the Bronx, NY we had an exciting finale for the first of the men’s football championship titles when NY Monaghan edged out a never-say-die NY Celtics in the Junior Football Championship decider.

The only game on the card in Gaelic Park Sunday pitted the number one and two junior seeds this summer with last year’s runners-up, NY Monaghan attempting to go one better this time around. The ‘Celtics meanwhile had been molded from the NY Minor Board program and featured several Americans looking for championship glory.

It turned out to be an exciting affair with never a lot between the sides all through.

Here to tell us about that final, look back to last week’s games as well as look ahead to Saturday’s Intermediate final, and, preview this weekend’s senior football championship semi finals, is NY GAA reporter, Eugene Kyne.

After Hurricane Irene left New York GAA fixtures blowing in the wind a week ago, it was back to action in the Bronx yesterday as we had the first of the NY GAA football playoff in the mens intermediate and junior football championship.

While all this was going on over the weekend, the New York Ladies football team was excelling in the All Ireland Junior Ladies Football Championship 3000 miles away on the Green Isle.

Here to tell us about that match and give a full report on all the action from the Bronx is NY GAA reporter, Eugene Kyne.
