The 8th annual CYC saw some 100 teams in action at U8 through U18 from all across America, Canada, England and Ireland.
The first three days saw sunshine but finals day on Sunday saw rain yet it didn’t dampen spirits.

A significant development was the prominence of hurling and camogie during this championship with noticeable high skill levels and a good spread of winners.

New York hurling won titles at U8 and U14, with Boston winning at U10, San Francisco tops in U12 and St Jarlaith’s from Cleveland impressing with the U16 title.
In Camogie we had wins for Rockland, NY (U8), Boston U10 and San Francisco at U12 and U14.

The main events of the championship saw Premier football and hurling action with visitors Lancashire (UK) taking the Minor football title when beating New York by a point, while the Premier Minor ladies championship went to North America (NACB) who beat NY, also by the minimum.
In the Premier Football U16 final, New York had a comfortable win over NACB, however, N. America got their revenge with an impressive display in the Premier U16 hurling decider when ousting NY.

Elsewhere, regular football action saw good wins for Rockland at U8, U10, U12 in both boys and girls. In the U16 and U18 girls football finals, St Brigid’s of Chicago got the better of Boston.
Meanwhile, the Delco Gaels from Delaware impressed in winning the football U14 Boys A title; New York club St. Barnabas won U16 A, and Rockland took the U18 A championship.

There was tremendous atmosphere at all age level games for the four days with parents and relatives cheering on their teams and very much into the spirit of this growing North American GAA youth championship.

Northeast GAA PRO, Rory O’Donnell contributed to report.

The birth of hurling at US college level has slowly been taking place over the past 3 years on America’s West Coast, particularly in California, and, over this past year on campuses across states of the Midwest.

This weekend, hurling as an American college sport, takes a huge step forward with the organisation of the inaugural National College Hurling Championships at Gaelic Park, Chicago, where teams from UC Berkeley in California take on Purdue and Indiana from the Midwest.

Also, there will also be a series of East v West competition with a mix of college players from Stanford, UC Davis and other western colleges, taking on an eastern selection that will include hurlers from University of Minnesota, University of Pittsburg, University of Akron, and Ohio State.

Here to fill us in on all the details of this historic event is National College GAA Secretary, Matt Schwertfeger.

A sticky issue for some divisions last year was on the matter of players Sanctions for those coming out from Ireland and not having J1 Visa’s.
Out of Motion 29 came the ruling that any player ‘eligable’ for a J1 Visa is allowed to have a sanction, while Motion 30 sees the deadline for sanction players to the NACB region extended from July 1st to July 20th. In Motion 31, the home based US player gets some leeway as their Inter-County transfer deadline to register with a club is being extended from December 31st to March 31st.
However, it seems though there has been no real progress on the TV rights issues or the showing of Gaelic sports online.
GaelicSportsCast spoke to new NACB PRO Tim Flanagan on Saturday evening about the how the changes affect American GAA and of the ongoing issue of TV access.

Based in Swatragh in County Derry, P O Kane Hurls is a member of the Irish Guild of Ash Hurley Makers, an elite set of 50 members who produce hurls for the top hurlers around the country and globe.

To mark the occasion, GaelicSportsCast features P O Kane Hurls in a podcast outlining the fascinating story of how Pat O Kane’s lifelong passion for hurling and camogie, steered him on retirement to begin and craft the art of hurley making.

He began by making hurls by hand for his beloved champion camogie club Swatragh but word spread of the quality of his work; demand grew and soon he was supplying hurling and camogie clubs, schools and colleges throughout Ireland and indeed to clubs worldwide.

Pat’s son Gabriel, who along with a dedicated team of staff, works with his father in the business and in this special episode of GaelicSportsCast, he tells about the process involved in making a hurl and recounts the P O Kane Hurls story.

Packy’s though were not about to give in and slowly started to reduce the deficit. With the margin down to four entering the closing stages Packy’s had renewed hope, however, a late goal from McBob’s sealed the deal and the championship on a scoreline of McBob’s 3-10 (19) Packy’s 2-5 (11). To tell us about the final and MHC’s preparations for the national finals in Chicago on the weekend, is MHC administrator Karen Fink.

So this year’s Milwaukee Hurling Club Championship has been whittled down to two following last weekend’s semi finals at Brown Deer Park. In the first semi final of the day, McBob’s had it all to do as they were paired with Shamrock Club who went into the game with the best record in the league. However, it was the underdogs McBob’s who prevailed in this one running out four point winners with some fine point scoring helping them to victory. In the second semi final little separated Packy’s and Track’s going into the game and so it was on the field on Sunday as an exciting encounter produced the game of the season. Holding a narrow lead at half time, Tracks pushed on to increase the margin to 4 in the final quarter, however, Packy’s produced a great late rally of a goal and two points, and, from there they never looked back winning by four. Here to tell us about both games is MHC’s, Karen Fink.

MHC Semi Final Results
McBob’s 2-09 (15) Shamrock Club 1-08 (11)
Packy’s 2-11 (17) Track’s 2-07 (13)

County Clare looked like they were going to upset the odds when putting three early goals passed their more fancied opponents, Packy’s. But as the game progressed, experience and a slightly better balanced side, aided Packy’s with a 4th quarter red card shown to a ’Clare player making all the difference with the favorites pulling away in the end. After establishing an early lead, Tracks shut down Trinity in the second period to take the win in their quarter final while McBob’s midfield proved too hot to handle for Slim’s. Here to tell us about the games is MHC’s Karen Fink.

Of the ten teams in this competition two did not make it through to the Playoffs this year – Brocach and Ale House – these two will now battle it out for the MHC Shield. Brocach though went down fighting as they overcame a dogged Slim’s by four points in a very exciting contest but it was their overall record that cost. The Irish Pub meanwhile, needed to beat McBob’s to make the ‘Playoff’s and they managed to do just but nearly came a cropper when after building up a huge 15 point lead at the break, they allowed McBob’s back into the game and after falling behind by two points nearing the end, they needed a last minute goal to stave off a nightmare defeat. To tell us about those games is MHC’s, Karen Fink.

It’s gettin’ down to the business end of the Milwaukee Hurling League as last Sunday saw the completion of Rd 8, leaving just two rounds left to play before the MHC Playoffs. The Packy’s versus Tracks game was eagerly awaited as they shared the same record on 5-1. The match-up didn’t disappoint but it was the stylish point scoring Packys who came out victors on a scoreline of 2-17 (23) to Tracks 2-09 (15). McBob’s and Co Clare, also tied on 3-3, produced another thriller with the former coming out four point winners in the end. Meanwhile, league leaders Shamrock Club 6-1, continue to impress with a comfortable win over Slims. Back to tell us about those games is MHC official, Karen Fink.
