It turned out to be another great day for Gaelic football in New Zealand today as this afternoon under brilliant sunshine, a fine local crowd witnessed some splendid competitive action at the finals of this year’s Wellington GAA Mixed Summer Sevens in Ian Galloway Park where The Garage extended their unbeaten run to take victory.

Two very exciting semi finals saw the new champions overcome Marty Morrissey by five points in the first, while in the second semi a thriller came down to the wire with Darryl’s Demons upsetting the other hotpot and unbeaten Wheelbarrow Wheelers by a point with the last kick of the game.

The final threw up another great game with a flurry of first half scores and a late goal sealing victory for The Garage against a tenacious ‘Demons outfit.

Here to tell us about the finals is Wellington GAA President, Donal Kavanagh who speaks to us from the tournament and coverage sponsors, The Establishment Bar in downtown Wellington where he is joined by the winning captain Darragh Curley.
Going into the last round of the regular ‘Sevens schedule, Group A saw Murphy’s Law 7pm with a chance of joining The Garage out of their pool, however, they faced their Group leaders on Wednesday night and despite their early promise in the tournament were well beaten by a score of [24] 4-12 to [11] 3-2.
Darryl’s Demons was another side in with a chance to make the finals and they seized their opportunity with both hands with a comfortable win over Clonbony Wolfhounds.

In Group B meanwhile, Al’s A Team, The Gazelles and Marty Morrissey were all vying for that all important second spot and as it turned out Al’s’ and Marty’ were paired together in the final round and it was the Clare Cork combo that Marty’ himself would be proud that took the game on a scoreline of [11] 3-2 [3] 1-0.
The Gazelles however didn’t make the most of their chances when disappointing against lively Cu Chulainn Hounds.

So the semi finals placements for Sunday at Ian Galloway Park are:

Semi Final 1 – The Garage v Marty Morrissey
Semi Final 2 – Wheelbarrow Wheelers v Darryl’s Demons

Despite the best efforts of wet weather, the Wellington Mixed Summer Sevens is in full swing with this Wednesday and Thursday nights action very competitive at Ian Galloway Park in Wellington, New Zealand.

The schedule was curtailed on Wednesday evening as rain saw just three games being played with The Gazelles v Hill 16 the pick of the night and best game to date.
Meanwhile, the team that caught the eye that evening was Murphy’s Law 7pm in their win over Darryls Demons.

On Thursday a mammoth seven games packed the programme with Al’s A Team and Wheelbarrow Wheelers also impressing.

Here to tell us all about this week’s Round 3 action is Wellington GAA President, Donal Kavanagh.

He is joined by two guests on the podcast, tournament organizer and Cork native, Trevor O’Halloran, and special visitor from Dr. Crokes in Kerry, Donal’s father, Sean.

On Wednesday, Wellington GAA in New Zealand put on a brilliant show for the promotion of football as Week 1 of their Summer Mixed 7s competition drew a record 16 teams to the pre Christmas event at Ian Galloway Park.

The event was supposed to begin the prior week but unfortunately it got rained-out except for two games on Thursday last, which, will see fixtures also this year.

We had some exotic names for the mixed seven’s last year and this time around is no different with several catching the eye such as Team Smash, Murphy’s Law 7pm, The King’s Army, Wheelbarrow Wheelers, Webb Ellis, an all Kiwi affair of course, and, wait for it….. Marty Morrissey!

This week the action began in earnest with no less than six matches during the week at Galloway Park and back once more to give us a run down on the games is Wellington GAA President, Donal Kavanagh.

New this year we hope to have a regular guest from Wellington on the programme each week and today, Donal’s Kerry comrade, Brian O’Sullivan Darcy, fresh out from Ireland, joins the conversation.

What a time it turned out to be for Queensland GAA both on and off the field at the Australasian Gaelic Games, Brisbane last week.

After the Biblical floods of last January that gutted the club house and destroyed playing facilities, it was nothing short of a miracle that last week the men, women, children and players from the GAA community at Willawong in Brisbane should have everything back in working order to host a very successful Kepplers 2011 Australasian Gaelic Games at Gaelic Park, Oct 2-8.

And, on the field of play Queensland GAA did themselves proud also when taking three of the four major trophies in a very competitive Australasian championships.

The week long tournament saw a return to the fold for NSW teams, however last year’s hosts from New Zealand could not make it on account of commitments with the Rugby World Cup taking place in their country.

Here to tell us about this year’s championships that saw many firsts, is Australasian and Queensland GAA Chairman, Seamus Sullivan.

The first semi final of the day sprang something of a surprise with the unfancied Luke’s Skywalkers out-goaling favourites, T-Shirt Time with a marvelous come from behind win, while in the second semi, underdogs Molly Malones also fought back to grab a brilliant victory over Clonbony Flyers.
The final was another thrilling affair with Molly’s just shading things at the break. Two goals midway through the second period for Molly Malones increased their advantage and despite late green flags from the ‘Skywalkers, Molly’s own late series of points finally pushed then to a [22] 3-13 to [18] 4-06 victory.

Here to fill us in on Wellington mens final’s Sunday’ is Kerry native, Wellington GAA Chairman, Donal Kavanagh.

Based in Swatragh in County Derry, P O Kane Hurls is a member of the Irish Guild of Ash Hurley Makers, an elite set of 50 members who produce hurls for the top hurlers around the country and globe.

To mark the occasion, GaelicSportsCast features P O Kane Hurls in a podcast outlining the fascinating story of how Pat O Kane’s lifelong passion for hurling and camogie, steered him on retirement to begin and craft the art of hurley making.

He began by making hurls by hand for his beloved champion camogie club Swatragh but word spread of the quality of his work; demand grew and soon he was supplying hurling and camogie clubs, schools and colleges throughout Ireland and indeed to clubs worldwide.

Pat’s son Gabriel, who along with a dedicated team of staff, works with his father in the business and in this special episode of GaelicSportsCast, he tells about the process involved in making a hurl and recounts the P O Kane Hurls story.

Tragedy also struck at the heart of the Irish community as among the 98 dead, it was confirmed that Owen McKenna, a native of Monaghan who had been living in Christchurch for a number of years with his young family, had also lost his life. Owen was a passionate GAA supporter and had been involved in the recently reformed Christchurch GAA club.

This weeks round 3 of the Mens Football Sevens in Wellington went ahead last night but was overshadowed by the tragedy and in today’s podcast, Wellington GAA Chairman Donal Kavanagh talks about a country and GAA community in mourning.

Round 2 of the Mens Sevens saw another fine evening for football where the first game of the night between Clonbony Flyers, who had been lying joint second with opponents Molly Malones, produced a thrilling opener.
Molly’s raced into an early lead with an eye-opening one goal and seven point conversion rate for the first period but ‘Clonbony weren’t about to throw in the towel and came back with a pair of second half goals to grab a draw and a share of the spoils.
Next up, T-Shirt Time had a very comfortable win over Dasey’s Runners while the last game of the evening produced another fine match with Cu Chulainn Crew and Luke Skywalkers in action.
A blistering opening period saw the Cu Chulainn boys take a commanding lead at the break but the ‘Skywalkers came back in the second period hitting two goals and six points however they were unable to reduce the deficit further.
Here to fill us in on all the details is Wellington GAA Chairman, Donal Kavanagh.

The new tournament saw six men’s teams take to the field last evening with four games down for decision at Ian Galloway Park in Wellington.
Members of the recent mixed sevens winners, T Shirt Time were back in action and they opened their account in a very exciting game with a narrow win over Clonbony Flyers. Clonbony’ though had been in action earlier when battling with Cuchulainn Crew for a two point win. Molly Malones had a comfortable win over Daseys Runners in the first game of the night but in the mostly Kiwi ‘Runners second game, they scored their first ever victory with a great win over Luke Skywalkers.
Here to fill us in on all the details is Wellington GAA Chairman, Donal Kavanagh.

Two strong second half performances in the semi final and final proved decisive for T Shirt Time as they took victory in Wellington GAA’s first Mixed Gaelic Football Sevens tournament of the year last night at Ian Galloway Park, Wellington, New Zealand.
It was another fine evening for the folks in Wellington, not only weather wise, but that once more football was the big winner on the night. Two very exciting semi finals and another great game in the decider saw the large crowd enjoy another successful mixed sevens competition.
In the first semi, T Shirt Time shaded a close opening half with opponents Clonbony Abu but it was the T’s who stepped forward to grab 2 goals and 2 points in the early second half to steer them to a 7 point win. In the second semi final another cracker saw the Monster Munchers in a fierce battle with Molly Malones, but it was the ‘Munchers who claimed the spoils when Niamh Kennedy scored a brilliant individual goal with the last kick of the game.
In the final, another good start from T-Shirt Time saw them score a goal and brace of points inside five minutes but the ‘Munchers came right back into it when Dee Finn goaled and at half time they trailed by a pair of scores 7 (1-04) to 5 (1-02).
But it was the T’s who again showed well soon after the break as a goal and three points put them in pole position once more. The Monster Munchers tried hard to turn the game around but it was not to be as ‘Time pushed on for a 17 (2-11) to 10 (1-07) victory.
Here to tell us more about the semi finals and final, and the other games that took place on the night, is Wellington GAA Chairman, Donal Kavanagh.

Early tournament runners, Empire Strikes Back and Flannagans Flyers looking hot in the past two weeks, ran out of steam Wednesday when comprehensively defeated by new favourites T-Shirt Time and Clonbony Abu respectively. ’Time and Clonbony, who meet in the first semi next week, would have been amongst the front-runners for overall victory but it was the manner of Empire’s’ and ‘Flyers demise that came as a shock.
The other team along with ’T-Shirt Time to come out of Group A was Molly Malone’s, who falling to the former in their first game, saw a last minute goal in their next match against Dasey’s Midnight Runners put them into the semi finals.
The improving Monster Munchers was the second team to advance out of Group B with an impressive win over Clonbony in their first game, and with a four point margin to spare over Cu Chulainn Crew in their second.
Here to fill us in on Wednesday’s action is Wellington GAA President, Donal Kavanagh.

Absolutely outstanding was the verdict by Wellington’s GAA President, Donal Kavanagh on the quality of fare with last minutes scores, excellent player shows and heroic underdog performances making it a memorable night for football in the city.
With one round left before the finals and things tightening even more at the top in both groups after Wednesday, next week’s games promise to be even more exciting. The evening also threw up its fair share of surprises and Donal takes us through all the action.

The pre Christmas sevens was such a success that there was a call for another mixed sevens competition and so on a lovely evening a fine turnout of 10 teams took to the field for the first week of this four round tournament.
In Group A, newcomers Empire Strikes Back with two games on the night, got off to a great start with a win over Frances Hankeys Crokes in their first match, but just fell short in a goal fest with Molly Malones in a thriller later in the evening. T-Shirt Time impressed in their 16 point win over a depleted Daseys Midnight Runners.
Meanwhile in Group B, Flannagans Flyers got off to another great start beating the mostly Kiwi side, Humans or Badgers while the pre Christmas sevens runners-up, Clonbony Abu were pushed all the way in another great game by the local rugby contingent of Cuchulainn Crew. In the last game of the night, the ‘Flyers were once again on song with a seven point win over the Monster Munchers.
Back once more to tell us about all the action is Wellington GAA Chairman, Donal Kavanagh.

The competition gets underway this evening, Wed Jan 12, and boasts another great turnout of teams with 10 sides in the mix for honours once again at Ian Galloway Park.
The teams stay basically the same from the pre Christmas six round tournament so that should add extra spice for the teams, players and supporters.
The previous competition turned out to be a huge success with Gaelic football rookies pooled from the local and international population, battling the more experienced expat crew. Many of the new players drew upon their skills at other sports and as each week passed it was becoming apparent that their level of proficiency was growing at a rapid rate. With this experience under their belt, competition this time around should prove even stiffer for the more experienced footballers.
Before Christmas, 2010 champs Clonbony Abu were outgunned in the final by surprise packet The Garage and though the winners are not ‘in name’ competing in the new tournament, Clonbony will be back and gunning to regain the top spot.

Flanagans Flyers will also be ones to watch with two games at the off, as will the improving T Shirt Time. New team Empire Strikes Back, sound like they mean business and with two games today, they could get off to a good start.

Wellington GAA Chairman, Donal Kavanagh, with his lilting Kerry voice will be back once again every Thurday to give his excellent report on all the action.

The Schedule for Wed Jan 12th is as follows:

Group A
6:30 Empire Strikes Back V Frances Hankeys
7:00 T-Shirt Time V Daseys Midnight Runners
7:30 Empire Strikes Back V Molly Malones

Group B
6:30 Flannagans Flyers V Humans or Badgers
7:00 Clonbony Abu V Cuchulainn Crew
7:30 Flannagans Flyers V Monster Munchers

In complete contrast to the arctic weather in Ireland, yesterday in Wellington, NZ , despite wet conditions, was positively balmy at 21 C for the finals of this year’s Gaelic Mixed Sevens at Ian Galloway Park. And what a day it turned out to be with two great semis and a thrilling final decider.
In the first semi, hot pot Welly’s Wellies were shocked by the goal scoring outfit, The Garage while in the other semi final last year’s champions Clonbony Abu had an easier time against Kelly’s Knights.
The final turned out to be a tantalizing affair with The Garage upsetting the odds. A powerful first half performance by The Garage had the champs under severe pressure and though Clonbony’ came back strongly in the second half, it was the ‘Garage who held on to take the title on a scoreline of 3-10 (19) to 3-05 (14).
Here to tell us about the finals and the rest of the results from Sunday is Wellington GAA President, Donal Kavanagh.

In Group A, the decisive game for second place was between the fancied Flannagan’s Flyers and the improving, The Garage. In a great game, it was The Garage who overturned the odds with a two point win. Meanwhile in Group B, the big game was the much anticipated clash between T Shirt Time and last year’s champions, Clonbony Abu. This one also turned out to be a cracker with two second half goals just about sealing the deal for the champions. So the lineup for the semi-finals on Sunday is : Welly’s Wellies v The Garage, and, Kelly’s Knights v Clonbony Abu.
Here to tell us about Wednesday night’s action is Wellington GAA President, Donal Kavanagh.
