Gaelic football folks ‘en Bretagne’ or in Brittany, France waste no time when it comes to getting back in there playing as their 2011/2012 Championnat de Bretagne de Football Gaélique is already up and running.

Over the past several years, an explosion of Gaelic football or football gaelique teams has sprouted in this northwest corner of France with nine teams in competition today.
Teams hail from all over the Bretagne region, from Nantes in the south to St Brieuc in the north coast, but the thing that’s most impressive is that most are new clubs formed within the last five years and are made up of almost all French players.

The main competition, Le Championnat de Bretagne de Football Gaélique began life back in 2005 and since that time has been growing stronger each season with new teams joining the league.

The dominant force in ‘football gaelique’ over the past number of years has been the team from Liffré who have won the last four championships and this year are on track to make it five-in-a-row as they lead the table after three rounds with 38 points.

Runners-up last year, Nantes are in second place on 30 points and will be determined to gain revenge while Vannes, who are in third spot, will also be hoping to do well based on their good showing at their home tournament before Christmas..

While the next round of the Championnat de Bretagne de Football Gaélique takes place on St Patricks Day, March 17, 2012 at Guerande, there is also a secondary competition in Brittany, the Bretagne Cup.
This Saturday, Jan 7 at 2.30pm at the Stade du Petit Bretagne sees hosts, Nantes take on Guerande in the Quart de Finale de la Coupe de Bretagne.

Bretagne also play a secondary competition

The popularity of the once indigenous sports is spreading beyond Irish cultural boundaries with one of the newer clubs formed in the middle of the Indian and Pacific oceans on the island wilderness of Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Gaelic Football and Hurling Association began life in 2007 on the island’s capital of Hobart and ever since has been building up a home grown culture of Gaelic Sports that sees a growing base of almost all local players.

In our podcast today, GaelicSportsCast speaks to the President of the Tasmanian Gaelic Football and Hurling Association, Sean O’Moore about how Gaelic football is making an impact on the sporting landscape of the island.

The tournament took place in Limerick as part of the city’s European City of Sport designation and was a source of immense pride for both the European GAA administration and players, many of whom had never kicked a ball in Ireland before.

With 26 teams in action from all across the Continent in the mens and ladies championship, as well as the mens shield, the standard was very competitive and the tournament turned out to be a great success.

Here to look back on the competition with GaelicSportsCast is European GAA Secretary, Tony Bass.

Founded just three short years ago, the club affiliated to the New York GAA Minor Board, set out from the start to broaden the scope of the player base beyond the Irish American community and introduce Gaelic football to mainstream America.

This strategy has worked wonders for the promotion of the sport in the region and to talk more about that and get an insight into Setanta’s beginnings, we speak today with founder member and Setanta GFC President, Jerry Padian.

In Antrim, London camogie champions Tara were trying to make it a case of third time lucky in seeking their place in an historic first All Ireland club semi birth when taking on Cushendall’s, Ruairi Og.

Meanwhile, at London in the All Ireland ladies junior and intermediate club football quarter finals, home-sides Fulham Irish and Parnells respectively were trying to over come Claregalway and Caltra of Galway.

There was also local competitions to be decided when Fullen Gaels of Manchester took on London junior champions in this year’s All Britain Hurling Club Championship, and also London senior hurling champions Robert Emmetts were trying to add the Collins Cup to their championship and league double when meeting last year’s double hero’s, Kilburn Gaels.

Here to tell us how it all panned out is London GAA Chairman, Tommy Harrell.

The ‘Gaels club was founded back in the early part of the last decade as one of a new breed of young juvenile Gaelic football clubs in New York City.

The club after humble beginnings has put down solid Gaelic sporting roots in the Woodside, Sunnyside and Maspeth areas of Queens and today participates in the NY GAA Minor Board’s, Spring and Fall Leagues at U8 – U 14 grades. Shannon Gaels also compete in local tournaments and at the annual American Continental Youth Championships (CYC).

Primarily focusing on Gaelic football, the club recently introduced hurling to young players, while at the same time adults started another exciting adventure when forming a Junior hurling team this summer.

Here to talk about the early years, the day-to-day running of the club, and its hopes for the future is PRO, Richard Corridan.

Hosted in a different city each year, the Asian Gaelic Games (AGG) since its foundation 15 years ago has witnessed tremendous growth with this year seeing some 57 teams from 22 clubs congregate from as far away as Dubai, India, Malaysia and Mongolia for top honors and the sheer enjoyment of playing Gaelic Sports. The AGG is a 9-a-side tournament featuring mens and ladies football, hurling with this year seeing the sport of Camogie taking its inaugural bow in this tournament.

This year’s three day event began on Friday, Oct 14 and here to tell us about all the competitions, the winners, and the task of organization is ‘Games Director and Seoul GAA Treasurer, Helen Cooke.

What a time it turned out to be for Queensland GAA both on and off the field at the Australasian Gaelic Games, Brisbane last week.

After the Biblical floods of last January that gutted the club house and destroyed playing facilities, it was nothing short of a miracle that last week the men, women, children and players from the GAA community at Willawong in Brisbane should have everything back in working order to host a very successful Kepplers 2011 Australasian Gaelic Games at Gaelic Park, Oct 2-8.

And, on the field of play Queensland GAA did themselves proud also when taking three of the four major trophies in a very competitive Australasian championships.

The week long tournament saw a return to the fold for NSW teams, however last year’s hosts from New Zealand could not make it on account of commitments with the Rugby World Cup taking place in their country.

Here to tell us about this year’s championships that saw many firsts, is Australasian and Queensland GAA Chairman, Seamus Sullivan.

The team pictured here split into green and a grey sides for the match.

Last September members of the Barley House Wolves Hurling team – a club founded in 2005 by US soldiers at Shannon airport when on route home after a 1 year tour of duty in Iraq – were redeployed to Kuwait and this time packed their hurls along with their rifles.

In Kuwait in-between missions, they kept their touch in on base with late night practice and soon new recruits joined the ranks.

Besides the difficulty of practicing on sand, they were eager to get a match going while there and after meeting the needs of their commanders and getting equipment shipped in, 12 members of the 197th Fires Brigade played the first ever hurling match by US soldiers on a US military base in Kuwait.
