Gaelic football folks ‘en Bretagne’ or in Brittany, France waste no time when it comes to getting back in there playing as their 2011/2012 Championnat de Bretagne de Football Gaélique is already up and running.

Over the past several years, an explosion of Gaelic football or football gaelique teams has sprouted in this northwest corner of France with nine teams in competition today.
Teams hail from all over the Bretagne region, from Nantes in the south to St Brieuc in the north coast, but the thing that’s most impressive is that most are new clubs formed within the last five years and are made up of almost all French players.

The main competition, Le Championnat de Bretagne de Football Gaélique began life back in 2005 and since that time has been growing stronger each season with new teams joining the league.

The dominant force in ‘football gaelique’ over the past number of years has been the team from Liffré who have won the last four championships and this year are on track to make it five-in-a-row as they lead the table after three rounds with 38 points.

Runners-up last year, Nantes are in second place on 30 points and will be determined to gain revenge while Vannes, who are in third spot, will also be hoping to do well based on their good showing at their home tournament before Christmas..

While the next round of the Championnat de Bretagne de Football Gaélique takes place on St Patricks Day, March 17, 2012 at Guerande, there is also a secondary competition in Brittany, the Bretagne Cup.
This Saturday, Jan 7 at 2.30pm at the Stade du Petit Bretagne sees hosts, Nantes take on Guerande in the Quart de Finale de la Coupe de Bretagne.

Bretagne also play a secondary competition

The tournament took place in Limerick as part of the city’s European City of Sport designation and was a source of immense pride for both the European GAA administration and players, many of whom had never kicked a ball in Ireland before.

With 26 teams in action from all across the Continent in the mens and ladies championship, as well as the mens shield, the standard was very competitive and the tournament turned out to be a great success.

Here to look back on the competition with GaelicSportsCast is European GAA Secretary, Tony Bass.

Today is something of a milestone for the GAA as for the first time ever the final round of this year’s Pan European Gaelic Football Championship throws in this morning on Irish soil in the city of Limerick.

Europe GAA since its foundation over a decade ago, with a half dozen teams, has seen phenomenal growth rate over the past few years with some 45 clubs participating across six regions in 12 countries at present, and, the hosting of the finals today in the European City of Sports, Limerick marks a homecoming for most and a new beginning for others.

The event throws in early today at the University of Limerick for the group stages with the finals of the Mens Football Championship and Mens Shield, and, Ladies Football Championship taking place later in the evening at the Gaelic Grounds.

There will be six teams (11 aside) in the mens championship with defending champions Den Haag again looking strong after taking Round 1 in Belgium, however, they will have to watch out for Guernsey who beat them at home on the Islands in Round 2 and both are tied on points going into today’s competition. Belgium who are in third spot will also have a say with the likes of Luxembourg, Spanish champions Valencia, and Stockholm battling it out for the minor placings.

In the ladies championship, unstoppable Belgium who have already secured their fourth title in a row, will nonetheless feature plenty of competition with 8 teams in action where Paris, Holland, Stockholm and Barcelona will be fighting it out for second and third places while the likes of Munich and the combo team of Niort (France)/Copenhagen and Swedish side Gothenbourg, will be battling for the remainder of the spoils.

In the biggest competition of the day the Mens Shield there will be 12 teams in action and like the ladies, Amsterdam by winning the first two rounds have already taken the title but there will still be plenty to play for in this very competitive event which features many non-Irish players. Teams such as Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Toulouse and Zurich/St Gallen will also be eagerly contesting for honours.

There will be some 350 players taking part in the competition with many European nationals kicking a ball in Ireland for the very first time while for other non-Irish from places like America, China, Columbia and Iran it will also be a very big first playing their new sport on Irish soil in this historic event.

(Watch out for results & full podcast report on the tournament).

In the mens championship, regional winners and runner’s up get automatic qualification for the Pan Europe series and once the series begins the team leading the table at the end of Round 3 – which for the first time ever is being held at Limerick in Ireland this November – will be crowned European champion.

The ladies European football championship format is a little different in that teams compete in 7 rounds across Europe – including the final three Pan Europe rounds – with table toppers all season, the victors.

Mens champion’s Den Haag are going for three in a row this year while Belgium ladies look unstoppable as they seek a fourth title in succession.

Last Saturday, the Pan Europe series began in earnest with Round 1 taking place at Leuven, Belgium.
Six mens teams lined up for Round 1 honours while a further 8 teams lined out in the ladies competition. In the mens Shield competition, which is pretty much open to all-comers, a fantastic 11 teams took to the field.

The usual suspects Den Haag and Belgium took the mens and ladies Round 1 titles respectively, while Amsterdam won out in the Mens Shield.

In this podcast we focus on the mens and ladies championship as we were unable to obtain a report on the Shield though results are given at the end of the podcast.

A very busy man last Saturday was player, coach of Stockholm mens and ladies teams, and Europe GAA PRO, Philip O’Connor, and, he spoke to GaelicSportsCast about the mens and ladies competitions at Leuven.

In the hurling, Zurich shaded De Haag by one point going into the finals on Saturday with defending champions, Belgium in third spot.

Zurich with three Swiss and one English player on their team did enough in the group stages to make it to the final. They drew with their nearest rivals Den Haag – who had two Dutch on their side – in their first match but it was their win over Belgium in their third match by [9] 0-9 to [7] 0-7 that set the foundation for overall victory.

These two met again in the final with hosts Belgium coming out on top this time by [12] 2-6 to [9] 1-6 but Zurich had accumulated more points than any other team and so took the championship.

Luxembourg and newcomers Budapest also took part in this year’s hurling finals.

In Camogie five teams took part in the finals: Luxembourg, Zurich, Paris and two teams from Belgium and it was the hosts, Belgium A who beat Paris in the championship decider.

Belgium having already won every round of the championship up to Saturday’s finals, had aleady gained the title even before a ball was struck, with another victory this time at home, the icing on the cake.

In this podcast we focus on the hurling finals when getting reaction from player and Inneoin Zurich Hurling Club President, Conor Lyne and also hear from manager and European Hurling Development Officer, Trevor Keating. We will look back at the Camogie championship in the coming weeks.

It’s finals time for European hurling and camogie as teams from all over the continent gather to battle it out for this year’s championship honours in Brussels, Belgium today.

It has been a terrific year for hurling in Europe this season with keen competition and more teams taking on a leadership role this season.

Zurich with several home grown players have in particular shone and going into today’s final tournament they lead the way with 71 points, with Den Haag close on their heels on 70 and with hosts, and, last year’s champion Belgium in third spot.

Earlier on in the season, Den Haag with an all Irish side won their home and Budapest tournaments with Zurich in the runner’s-up slot on both occasions. However, Zurich on home soil for the next tournament, got their revenge over Den Haag with Belgium coming in third place once more.
The reason that Zurich are ahead of Den Haag on points is that in European hurling any teams that fields non-Irish or native players get extra points and this yet could prove crucial.

In Camogie, hosts Belgium are the title holders and having won all tournaments so far this year have already been crowned champions once again. Teams from Zurich, Paris and Luxembourg will join the hosts in the final competition.

The venue for the finals is the Catholic University of Leuven in Brussels with action starting from early this morning.
After the tournament there will be a meal and a presentation ceremoney at De Valera’s Irish Pub.

One of the performances of the season saw Zurich Inneoin hurling club overcome rivals Den Haag in a thrilling finale to last weekend’s 3rd round of the 2011 European Hurling Champi0nship, in Zurich, Switzerland.

The Zurich side, with a half a dozen Swiss and international players, out-gunned Den Haag – who had won the prior two tournaments – to take their first tournament win in five years. Result Final – Zurich [16] 2-10 Den Haag [14] 0-14.

In Camogie meanwhile, Paris joined hosts Zurich and championship leaders, Belgium, for this tournament, but it was the Zurich side who caused a shock when beating Paris with effectively an all Swiss team to reach the final.
However Belgium proved too strong in the final.
Here to tell us about both competitions is Zurich club member and European Hurling Officer, Trevor Keating, and, club secretary and Swiss camogie player, Linda Bruetsch.

On the field, the European regional championships in football, hurling, ladies football and camogie competitions are heating up nicely, while excitement is also building ahead of the European County Board (ECB) preparing to send a hurling squad to the new International Junior C Hurling Tournament in Thurles on July 9.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, the best wine could be saved for later in the year as the 3rd Round of this year’s Pan European Mens Football Championship looks to have a home-coming of sorts when the city of Limerick is set to host the final round in early November.

Here to talk about that fantastic occasion, the new website and action on the field of play throughout Europe so far this season is new ECB GAA PRO, Philip O’Conner.

That teaching and Irish connection still exists, and, the city’s tale took another twist recently when a group of Irish teachers came together to introduce Gaelic sports to the area when forming a GAA club, the Saint Gallen Bears.

The young club has been working very hard since their start the day after the All Ireland Hurling final last year and is already reaching out not only, to the only other Swiss club to the south in Zurich, but is also actively promoting Gaelic football and hurling to the local community in Saint Gallen.

The club recently played the first ever inter Swiss club football match on May 22 against their southern neighbours Zurich Inneoin in Zurich, and despite an obvious lack of experience they put in a great performance.

GaelicSportsCast spoke to the club’s secretary Monaghan native, Brian Clerkin, during the week of that historic match, about the Saint Gallen Bears club and its hopes for developing a solid footing for Gaelic sports in the Swiss Alps.

Holland’s, Den Haag hurling team, took their second competition of the season over the weekend when winning the 2nd Round of this year’s European Hurling Championship at the new location for hurling in Europe – Budapest, Hungary.

Despite hosts Budapest, coming in 4th of four teams in action on Saturday, the recently formed hurling team - they also have a football team – will be very happy to have brought the sport for the first to the Hungarian capital where already some locals have fallen in love with the ancient game.

In a repeat of the previous round, Den Haag and Zurich once more reached the final with the Dutch side again coming out on top. Last year’s champions, Belgium, struggling to find form, came in 3rd position when accounting for Budapest.

Meanwhile, in the Camogie final, Belgium again took the honours when beating Zurich.

Here to tell us about the weekend’s tournament is Den Haag GAA Chairman, Mathew Morris.

It turned out to be a fantastic opening weekend for both European hurling and camogie last Saturday, as competitive games of a high standard was the order for Round 1 of this year’s European Hurling and Camogie Championship at the Hague, Holland.

The mens hurling decider between hosts Den Hague and Zurich was a thrilling final as the game went to Over Time with the locals narrowly coming away with a two point win.
In the Camogie, Belgium A ladies out-goaled a gallant Paris side in another exciting final.

It was an early beginning for all last Saturday with the first games throwing in at 9.30 am in the morning and the temperature already hovering at 25 degrees.
The Mens competition format saw four teams play 4 x 15 minutes games, while in the Ladies five teams played 5 games of 12.5 minutes.

The hurling began with Belgium playing Luxembourg and after a close match, Belgium came out on top winning 0-8 to 0-4. Next Den Haag played Zurich, and quickly found out that this Zurich team were well up for it, with players performing like they had been training together all winter.
Den Haag’s backs were in trouble, a goal blitz ensued and it ended with a Zurich win [17] 4-5 to [12] 1-9, leaving hosts the Hague with a mountain to climb.
Next game was Den Haag versus Belgium. Den Haag knew they had to at least win their next two games to get to the final but it wouldn’t be easy against reigning champs, Belgium. Den Haag solved its problems in the back and secured a tight win, beating Belgium [8] 1-5 to [6] 1-3.
Up next, Luxembourg against the form team, Zurich. The Swiss outfit with natives in their side, won it in style [21] 2-15 to [[8] 0-8; the result confirming their favourite status. Next Zurich and Belgium played, this was a crunch tie for Belgium, as they had to win to have any chance of reaching the final.
Belgium trailed by a point at half time, however a goal late in the second period gave Belgium the win [8] 1-05 to [7] 0-7.
Den Haag had the fortunate situation of knowing they now had to beat Luxembourg by at least 6 points to secure a place in the final. The Hague’s coach for the day Sean Simpson, wisely didn’t tell the players the amount they had to win by and only let them know at the end of the game.
There was little to fear however as they ran out comfortable winners. Belgium went on to win 3rd place playoff against Luxembourg.
The final saw Den Haag and Zurich square off once again.
Zurich started better and kept a lead for most of the game, however, with a minute to go and Den Haag 4 points down, a goal from Shane O’ Sullivan followed by a point from Noel Dillon, saw the hosts grab a 2-8 draw and extra time. Zurich got on the board first with a goal, but the Hague boys dug deep and scored 5 points in the second period of extra time to deny an unlucky Zurich.

It's all action around the Luxembourg (red-blue) square as Zurich pile on the pressure in a game at Rd 1 of the European Camogie Championship. (Photo by Jeroen Tibbe).

The Ladies Camogie was the big surprise, not only because they had more teams than the men for the first time in European hurling history, but also because the standard was of an order higher than ever witnessed before.

The Paris ladies looked the team to beat as they went unbeaten in the early rounds. Going well aslo was Belgium A early on and both Paris and Belgium met in the final.
In a highly skilled and exciting match, the Belgium Ladies percevered by a goal on a scoreline of [22] 6-4 to [19] 5-4.

Chairman of Den Hague GAA, Mathew Morris pleased with the tournament outcome, said afterwards that the hurling was very competitive and very little separates the teams in the championship. He also said that the ladies tournament success could point to uncharted waters for the future.

“I was delighted with the tournament, because all hurling teams were only a puck of the ball away from winning on the day, which means that there is competition now between all teams, which can only be good for European hurling.
“The Camogie was also of a really high standard and will overtake the men’s if it keeps going this way. I would also like to thank the referees for there hard work all day in that heat,” The Hague chairman said.

This is the first of four tournaments in the hurling and camogie circuit and European hurling champions Belgium will be anxious to get their season off to a good start. However, three time European champions, hosts Den Hague and Zurich, along with Luxembourg will also have their say.

The Camogie competition sees an unprecendeted 5 teams in action from Zurich, Luxembourg, Paris and two from Belgium battling it out for the opening points of the season.

Meanwhile, the Mens Benelux Football Championship and Ladies European Football competitons got off to a very successful start in Berbourg, Luxembourg last month when record attendence numbers witnessed some stellar football at the FC Berdenia stadium.

In the mens competition and much to the joy of the many locals at the game, Luxembourg regained their tournament title from last year when beating European champions, Den Hague by [13] 1-10 to [9] 0-09 in extra time, while in the ladies final another fine competition saw European champions, Belgium A beat out rivals Paris by [12] 2-06 to [7] 0-07.

In this podcast, GaelicSportsCast takes a look back at that tournament when talking to Luxembourg GAA PRO, Damien Higgins, and also looks ahead with Den Hague GAA Chairman, Mathew Morris to Saturday’s hurling opener in Holland.

Back in Ireland after GaelicSportsCast visit to France last week, today’s podcast brings you a full report on the 4th Round of the League Bretagne/Brittany, which was held last Saturday in the beautiful French city of Nantes.
Playing 11 a-side, three teams - Guerande, Liffré and hosts Nantes (Rennes withdrawal) battled it out in hot afternoon sun at Stade du Petit Breton on the outskirts of the city where family, friends and even local onlookers came to watch this new sport of Football Gaelique.
North of Nantes, on the same day along the Atlantic coast at St Brieuc, there was another four team tournament taking place as part of the League’s 4th Round and so with just a 5th and final round of matches left to play, last weekend’s result could prove crucial.

In pole position before Saturday was four time ‘League winners and last year’s champions, the all French side of Liffré and after a great battle with Nantes (some Irish) in their first game and an easier victory over Guerande (all French) in their second match, Liffré were crowned tournament and 2011 League Champions.
Nantes fielded five Irish students in the game versus Liffré and after a great start when opening up a 2 goals and 2 points (8) to 0-2 lead. However, they came under pressure in the middle of the field where the impressive Phillipe Cornilleau and Olivier Kowarski took control for the visitors.
Liffré pulled it back to a one point deficit at the break but a goal rush by Nantes after the restart saw the champions now behind by 11 points. However, they didn’t panic and soon began to overrun Nantes hitting the net four times to soon draw level. With minutes left in the game they added another 1-1 to take a fantastic victory where never-say die attitude was clearly on show.
This podcast includes live moments from the tournament, sounds of the day, reports on the games and interviews (English and French translations) on and off the field with club officials, and, a representative from a Nantes student sporting body.

Over the past five years the number of clubs in France is growing almost on a monthly basis, especially in Le Bretagne or Brittany region where some 8 clubs are now in existence.
The Nantes Club in Brittany play hosts to Guerande and Liffres tomorrow – Rennes late withdrawal – and here to talk about the tournament is recent Irish Nantes recruit, Ciaran Murphy.
This podcast also marks a brave new world for GaelicSportsCast as we are attending the event tomorrow and in this programme we bring you a report direct from training last night in sunny Nantes.

Based in Swatragh in County Derry, P O Kane Hurls is a member of the Irish Guild of Ash Hurley Makers, an elite set of 50 members who produce hurls for the top hurlers around the country and globe.

To mark the occasion, GaelicSportsCast features P O Kane Hurls in a podcast outlining the fascinating story of how Pat O Kane’s lifelong passion for hurling and camogie, steered him on retirement to begin and craft the art of hurley making.

He began by making hurls by hand for his beloved champion camogie club Swatragh but word spread of the quality of his work; demand grew and soon he was supplying hurling and camogie clubs, schools and colleges throughout Ireland and indeed to clubs worldwide.

Pat’s son Gabriel, who along with a dedicated team of staff, works with his father in the business and in this special episode of GaelicSportsCast, he tells about the process involved in making a hurl and recounts the P O Kane Hurls story.

A wee bit of history will be made in Spain tomorrow, Sat Feb 19, as the first ever Gaelic football action will be witnessed in the southern city of Seville.
The occasion is Round 1 of this year’s 7 th Iberia GAA Championship taking place at a modern sports facility by Seville’s Olympic Stadium.
The competition will see seven men’s teams from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Marbella, A Coruña, Pamplona joining Seville for an exciting day of football in this first European tournament of the year.
Winners of the Iberia Championship last year, Madrid, will once more be heavily fancied in this opener while Barcelona, Valencia and hosts Seville will also be vying for a good start to this regional competition.
There is also a Ladies Iberia Championship round with four teams taking part: two from Madrid and one each from Barcelona and Valencia with some 200 players in all taking part between both competitions.
Eire Og Seville – ‘los verdirojos’ was formed recently in 2009 in the city and debuted in last year’s championship at Marbella, and it will be a very proud moment for the host club tomorrow when Gaelic goes vivas!
Here to tell us about that moment and to preview the tournament is Eire Og Seville co-founder, Kevin Lenane.

The Europe GAA Convention was held recently in Stockholm, Sweden, and for the first time ever, GAA supporters across the continent and indeed around the world, had a birds eye view of proceedings as the AGM was streamed live over the Internet.
Among many of the topics discussed at this year’s convention was the exciting new games development pilot scheme announced for Brittany. With some 15 clubs, France has the largest number across the 17 country GAA landscape with Le Bretagne region in particular seeing amazing growth in football clubs of late.
In an effort to support games in Brittany, Europe GAA secured funding of EUR 15,000 from both Croke Park and the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs towards building cultural and sporting relationships through the development of Gaelic sports in French GAA clubs, youth programs and schools.
Delegates heard also of how careful planning and organisation was needed to further nurture participation on the Continent in all four GAA codes of football, hurling , camogie and ladies football.
Europe GAA have very ambitious plans for 2011 as we could see the very first European Gaelic Football Championship final round being held in Ireland next year. Here to tell us about that and the many issues discussed at Convention is the re-elected European GAA Chairman, Willie Cashin.

An event that might have very positive results for the continuing growth of Gaelic football in Europe took place early this month in Ireland. We are talking here about the recent week long tour of two French Gaelic footballs clubs, Lugdunum CLG from Lyon and the Tolosa Gaels from Toulouse.
This was a first for both clubs who are new to Gaelic football and the trip was organised to grow a greater understanding of the game and the people who play the sport. In between visits to Newgrange and Connemara, members of the French clubs joined forces to play against Irish clubs such as Kilcock in Kildare, Na Piarsaigh in Limerick City and also against unique opposition at the University of Limerick – a selection of International students.
Back in France after the tour, GaelicSportsCast talked to Toulouse club President, Guillaume Kerrien and Lyon player, Pierre Adroguer about their experience of playing football for the first time in Ireland and what it will mean for their newly formed clubs.

Last Saturday in Maastricht, Holland, was very much a case of champions day as the reigning title holders in men’s and ladies football once more took the spoils in this year’s Europe GAA Football Finals.
In the premier competition played on a state-of-the-art all weather surface facility in Maastricht, the third and final round of the men’s championship saw leaders Den Hague prove too strong once again when overcoming their great rivals Paris Gaels A by five points in the final. The win is an historic one in that Den Hague becomes the first men’s football team to retain their title since the European GAA was set up some 10 years ago.
In the ladies championship, the 7th and final round saw Belgium A continue their dominance in Europe with an emphatic 3-13 (22) to 0-02 win over Paris Gaels A. However, it was a much closer affair in the Mens Shield competition as four teams vied for top honours. Frankfurt led second place Copenhagen by four points leading into last Saturday’s competition. It took a semi final clash between these two to decide the competition and it was last year’s winners, Copenhagen who did the business once more with a three point victory. Though Amsterdam beat Copenhagen in the final – their first tournament win in four years – Copenhagen’s season record over nearest rivals Frankfurt was good enough to see them take the trophy. Here to tell us all about the championship round is Asst. European GAA Secretary, Mike Cryan and Paris Gaels full forward, Darren Lovely.

22:47
NOTE: Full results will be posted when available.

Some 10 years ago, the European County Board (ECB) with less than a handful of clubs was formed, but today the entire scenario has dramatically changed with numbers now over 40 and growing. Tomorrow Saturday Nov 6, in many ways marks a new era for European GAA as the biggest ever number of teams takes part in the Pan Europe Footballs finals round in Maastricht, Holland.
Heading into this year’s finale, we see a record 29 teams taking part from countries throughout the length and breadth of Europe.
In the Ladies Championship, 10 teams square off, while in the Mens Football Shield, a very exiting finale awaits with no less then 15 teams ready for the fray.
The premier competition in the Mens Senior Football Championship has four teams doing battle with champions The Hague in pole position after winning the two previous rounds and looking good to retain their title. It’s also looking good for Belgium ladies as they lead the seven round ladies championship series. Paris Gaels are close behind in second place, but it would have to take an unlikely meltdown by the champions from Belgium to relinquish the their crown.
The competition that could turn out to produce the most exciting finish in Europe this year is undoubtedly the Shield as Frankfurt shade things by 4 points at the top followed closely by second seed Copenhagen, with Belgium B and Prague also in close proximity.
At the event, the biggest country representation with six clubs is from the European state with the largest number of GAA clubs, France, while the host country of Holland is next with three clubs.
The tournament takes place at the Maastricht GAA facilities who share grounds and clubhouse with the Maribos rugby team in the city. Some 5 pitches including a full sized Gaelic football and hurling all-weather pitch will be is use all day tomorrow along with state of the art floodlighting.
