Queensland GAA League action saw no upsets on Sunday as results went along expected lines at Gaelic Park Willawong in Brisbane.
In Round 3 of the Senior Football Div 1 League, John Mitchels fresh from their Carpenter Cup victory the prior week, were once more on song when easing past Souths. Mitchels led by 8 points at the break and building on their first half lead never looked back when recording a very comfortable [22] 1-19 [7] 0-7 win. The Harps, who had succumbed to Mitchels in that cup final, also had an easy time of it when defeating Shamrocks by [25] 2-19 to [15] 3-6. Both winners top the league standings and look set to meet once more at the business end of this year’s league.
In Round 3 of the Ladies Football League, the same pairings brought similar results, but unfortunately for both Souths and Shamrocks, the margins of defeat were greater. After Sunday’s results, Mitchel’s top the table with Easts Celts (who had a bye this weekend) in second spot.
There was just the one game in Round 6 of the Hurling League with in form Na Fianna having a much tougher task than any of the football victors. They faced Cuchulains and it was a close match all through. Na Fianna shaded things at half time when leading by two points and did just enough in the end to hold off Cuchulains by [23] 0-23 to [18] 0-18. Fianna still top the table with these two likely to meet again to decide matters.
The Camogie entered its second round at Willawong on the weekend with three round-robin games on the schedule. Game 1 saw Tara Gaels defeat Naomh Padraig comfortably, before Tara had a much closer call in their second game against Eire Og. The latter led by 9 at the break but a storming come-back by Tara saw them notch up a whopping six goals to brush past a stunned Og side. The last game of the series saw Eire Og regroup to defeat Naomh Padraig.
