New South Wales GAA season opens with additional teams this year

The 2012 New South Wales (NSW) GAA season got underway way at the weekend with a full schedule of games at new venue Monarch Fields, Ingleburn in Sydney.

This year sees a number of new teams in competition for the first time with Bondi Gaels joining the men’s senior football league, bringing the number of teams to six. In hurling, Cormac McAnallens have also added a squad leaving five teams to battle it out for 2012 honours. There is a new team as well in ladies football as Penrith Gaels make it a six team league, while in camogie, the number is unchanged at five, however the format moves from  a 7-a-side competition to 9-a-side.

In Round 1 of the Mens Football League, there was three games scheduled last Sunday with last year’s champions Michael Cusacks getting off to a good start with a comfortable win over Young Ireland, while 2011 runners-up Cormac McAnallens had too much for brave rookies, Bondi. The third game saw a positive result for Penrith when defeating last season’s championship runners-up, Clan na Gael.

Two games in mens senior hurling, saw champions ‘Cusacks record an easy victory over newcomers ‘McAnallens, while Central Coast held out for a thrilling one point win over Craobh Padraig.

In ladies football meanwhile, we had victories for champions Central Coast, Michael Cusacks, with an impressive win also for Cormac McAnallens over Clan’. Finally in camogie, champions ‘Coast put up a big score against ‘McAnallens, while ‘Cusacks put in a similar performance versus Craobh Padraig.

This year GaelicSportsCast has a regular Sydney Sunday podcast lined up starting this weekend, May  13.
Meanwhile, the folks in Toronto had their Season Opening last Sunday and GaelicSportsCast will bring you a weekly podcast from there every Thursday starting tomorrow, May 10.
