Queensland Carpenter Cup underway

This weekend saw the opening round of the six week Queensland GAA Carpenter Cup in Australia and while officials were glad to get things rolling, continuous wet weather this year has been a constant threat with heavy conditions for the last game again yesterday at Willawong Gaelic Park, Brisbane.

Games on Saturday and Sunday saw a competitive start to the Senior Men’s Football  competition with John Mitchel’s impressing with a good win over Shamrocks. Players who caught the eye were Peter Scullion, Stuart Roddy, and Garrett Hallagan, while new players, Shane Butler and Colm Crinnigan had strong games for the Shamrocks.  Though beaten the Shamrocks appear much  improved on last season.

The Easts Celts v Harps game was something of a see-saw battle, and a draw was a fair result in very trying conditions. Regular Alan Murphy and Owen Stephens did well for East Celts, while Eamon Fitzpatrick and Oisin Lynch were Harps best on the day. The Souths play their first game next weekend.

The Ladies Football competition has really started where it finished last year, with both Easts Celts and John Mitchel’s looking very strong once more. Souths too should field a stronger team for their first game next week, but it looks like it’s a two horse race again this year. Both Easts and John Mitchel’s have some very talented players.
