While the senior hurling league is put on the back-burner for the moment, the senior hurling championship is in full swing in London with last weekend seeing second round action at Ruislip.
Three games were scheduled last Saturday with the most noteworthy fixture pitting 2009 champions Robert Emmets against last year’s hero’s, Kilburn Gaels. A close contest all through saw St Gabriel’s hold on to beat the champion’s on a scoreline of [18] 1-15 to [15] 1-12.
The second match of Saturday afternoon saw a good win by Sean Treacy’s over Brothers Pearse while in the last senior hurling game of the day, Robert Emmets had a large margin to spare over Fr Murphy’s when winning by [30] 3-21 to [11] 0-11.
Unfortunately, this fixture was marred by incident, as according to media reports there was violent exchanges between the sides at the end of the game which allegedly resulted in unseemly conduct in a dressing room and later in the car park.
Officials are said to await the result of the referees report before any action is taken in this matter.
The results of Round 2 now sees ‘Gabriels and ‘Emmets on top of the table on 4 points, with Kilburn Gaels and Sean Treacy’s in third spot on 2 points, while Bros Pearse and ‘Murphy’s share the bottom of the table with no points as yet.
In senior football in the league meanwhile, Kingdom Kerry Gaels had a very good win over defending champions, Tir Chonail Gaels, [11] 0-11 to [8] 0-8, while Parnells impressed when outclassing St Brendans by [29] 3-20 to [3] 0-3.
This means that Parnells now join Neasden Gaels at the head of the league table.
This coming Sunday sees the start of the senior football championship with Tara playing Kingdom Kerry Gaels, while league champions, Tir Chonail Gaels take on the inform and 2010 runners-up, Parnells.
