#259 Zurich champions of Europe

Last weekend’s European Hurling & Camogie finals at the grounds of the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium saw Inneoin Zurich and Belgium crowned this year’s hurling and camogie champions respectively.

In the hurling, Zurich shaded De Haag by one point going into the finals on Saturday with defending champions, Belgium in third spot.

Zurich with three Swiss and one English player on their team did enough in the group stages to make it to the final. They drew with their nearest rivals Den Haag – who had two Dutch on their side – in their first match but it was their win over Belgium in their third match by [9] 0-9 to [7] 0-7 that set the foundation for overall victory.

These two met again in the final with hosts Belgium coming out on top this time by [12] 2-6 to [9] 1-6 but Zurich had accumulated more points than any other team and so took the championship.

Luxembourg and newcomers Budapest also took part in this year’s hurling finals.

In Camogie five teams took part in the finals: Luxembourg, Zurich, Paris and two teams from Belgium and it was the hosts, Belgium A who beat Paris in the championship decider.

Belgium having already won every round of the championship up to Saturday’s finals, had aleady gained the title even before a ball was struck, with another victory this time at home, the icing on the cake.

In this podcast we focus on the hurling finals when getting reaction from player and Inneoin Zurich Hurling Club President, Conor Lyne and also hear from manager and European Hurling Development Officer, Trevor Keating.  We will look back at the Camogie championship in the coming weeks.
