A wee bit of history will be made in Spain tomorrow, Sat Feb 19, as the first ever Gaelic football action will be witnessed in the southern city of Seville.
The occasion is Round 1 of this year’s 7 th Iberia GAA Championship taking place at a modern sports facility by Seville’s Olympic Stadium.
The competition will see seven men’s teams from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Marbella, A Coruña, Pamplona joining Seville for an exciting day of football in this first European tournament of the year.
Winners of the Iberia Championship last year, Madrid, will once more be heavily fancied in this opener while Barcelona, Valencia and hosts Seville will also be vying for a good start to this regional competition.
There is also a Ladies Iberia Championship round with four teams taking part: two from Madrid and one each from Barcelona and Valencia with some 200 players in all taking part between both competitions.
Eire Og Seville – ‘los verdirojos’ was formed recently in 2009 in the city and debuted in last year’s championship at Marbella, and it will be a very proud moment for the host club tomorrow when Gaelic goes vivas!
Here to tell us about that moment and to preview the tournament is Eire Og Seville co-founder, Kevin Lenane.
