Today marks another watershed for Gaelic sports as the University of California Davis for the first time in the history of the college enters a hurling team into sporting competition.
At 12 noon today (PST) in the home of Gaelic games at Treasure Island in San Francisco, history will be made when UC Davis march out onto the field to play Stanford in the first game of the 2011 Northern Collegiate Hurling Championship.
The past two years has seen Stanford, the inaugural winners of the competition, and last year’s victors, Berkeley, play each other in a best of three series. However this year, highlighting the sport’s growth throughout the California college system,
the rookies from UC Davis join the battle for college hurling honours.
During the week, GaelicSportsCast spoke to UC Davis ‘Culchies’ Co-Chairperson, James Daly about today’s game and about the hurling scene on this vast campus south of Sacramento.
