Video by Harry Harron

RECORDS will be broken tomorrow Sat, Oct 9  when men and ladies football teams take to the field at Vasas Sports Club in Budpaest, Hungary for Round 2 of the 2010 Gaelic Football Pan Europe Championship. This Rd 2 tournament sees an unprecedented 23 teams from some 11 countries in action – a clear indication of the amazing growth of Gaelic sports across Europe over the past 5 years.

In the mens championship, there will be 7 teams taking part with The Hague, last year’s European champions and Rd 1 winners from Munich leading the way, with Paris, Belgium A, Luxembourg, Guernsey, along with additional participants Scandinavian champions, Stockholm and hosts Budapest Rangers.

The Hague won all their games in Munich in early September, but runners up Paris weren’t that far off, and niether were 3rd place finishers, the boys from Luxembourg. However, a team that they all might have to watch out for is Stockholm, who in their first year as a club took the Scandinavian championship by storm during the summer and with some inter-county talent in their panel could be a surprise packet.

There is even a bigger number of teams competing in this Rd 6 Ladies Championship where there will be no less than 9 teams in action. Belgium won in Munich and leading into tomorrow’s tournament look to have all but clinched their third title in a row. The ladies competition also sees a unique occurence as guest team from Ireland, Old Leighlin Ladies, Carlow  will be taking part in the group stages. Meanwhile, in the Mens Shield, a further 7 teams from across Europe will field at the Angyalföldi Sporttelep complex.
