A great weekend of action at Gaelic park in the Bronx, NY Sunday, saw Armagh and Mayo battle to an overtime draw in a thrilling intermediate football championship final, while in the first of two senior football semi finals, Leitrim took out champions Down to reach this year’s final. The first match of the day saw an epic between the number 1 and 2 seeds in the intermediate final, however, there simply was no seperating these two and they finished Armagh 2-12 (18) to Mayo’s 0-18 (OT). The rematch should be another nail biter tonight, Tuesday in Gaelic Park.
Leitrim and Down were level at half time in their game but a goal by Dan Doona mid way through the second half sent Leitrim on their way. Down weren’t helped in their comeback efforts when they found themselves minus a player and lost their title on a scoreline of 2-09 (15) to 2-05 (11). In the other senior semi final, a sluggish start for Cork saw them open up in the second period and go on to dominate opponents Cavan in a final score of 0-14 to 0-06.
The Senior Football Championship Final between Leitrim and Cork is set for next Sunday, Oct 3 at 4pm.
