Warwickshire Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in the industrial heartland that is the West Midlands of England, is the second largest Gaelic sports unit outside of London. Underage development through school programs has greatly boosted playing numbers as has a new wave of Irish immigrants arriving in the region. Last weekend saw the start of its premier competition, the Warwickshire GAA Championship with teams from Birmingham and the surrounding cities of Coventry, Nottingham and Wolverhampton doing battle for this year’s senior football championship honours. From next week, GaelicSportsCast will be giving you a weekly rundown on all the action from the home of GAA in the region, Pairc Na hEireann in Birmingham with reports from PRO and longtime Warwickshire and Britain GAA official, George McGuigan. Today the Tyrone native talks to us about the GAA scene in the county of Warwickshire.
