The first round of the New York GAA 2010 Championship continued over the weekend at Gaelic Park in the Bronx. Though their cousins back home suffered, in the ‘Big Apple’ Cork senior footballers, last year’s runners-up and recent Ned Devine Cup winners, again showed up well when proving too much for Tyrone with a comfortable 10 point victory. But it was the performance of Cavan in the next game that really caught the eye as they had a very impressive 2-16 (22) to 0-06 victory over Donegal. Cavan fell at the quarter final stage last year to eventual winners Down, but this good early ‘Championship performance shows that they are keen to go further this year. On Saturday, Kerry had a 4 point win over Sligo while in the Intermediate match on the same day, Mayo proved too strong for NY Rangers. In Ladies Senior Football yesterday, Donegal ran out winners over Fermanagh while Cavan, after a flier of a start, held on for a 4 point win over Na Fianna.
