At Gaelic Park in the Bronx yesterday, New York Leitrim’s win over Down in the semi final of the Ned Devine Cup in mens football, puts them in with a chance to claim their third successive title. A late push secured them the win over last year’s Championship winners. In the other semi final Cork had to rely on the exploits of one Vinnie Reilly to eventually get them over the line against Tyrone as the Sligo man grabbed a memorable hat-trick of goals for a five point win. Also last weekend, we saw the first stirrings of hurling in the Big Apple as Gaelic Park played host to an inter city 7’s hurling tournament between the three New York teams, Offaly, Tipperary and Galway and visitors from Boston in the guise of Fr Tom Burkes and Boston Tipp. Unfortunately for the local clubs, the visitors met in the final with ‘Tom’s edging out their great Beantown rivals.
