Leitrim says goodbye to Philly’

The funeral took place this morning in St Patrick’s Church,  Mohill of Leitrim county footballer, Philly McGuinness .
On a beautiful sunny Spring day, a massive crowd of mourners from all over the county and beyond came to pay their respects to the McGuinness family on the passing of Philly who tragically died after sustaining a fatal injury in a local match last weekend.
The crowd spilled out onto the car park where mourners wore the different colours of county clubs.  The lovely singing of the choir wafted out among the mourners as each remembered the dashing forward in their own way.
From deep within the church, the sounds of a solo performer singing Sarah McLaughlin’s  tender ‘In The Arms Of an Angel’, weaved its way through sad hearts before slipping out into the sunlight and down through the town.
His coffin was draped with two jerseys – the green and white of  Mohill and the green and gold of Leitrim.
The Mohill Club,  county team and, Melvin Gaels club who happened to be playing Mohill on that ill-fated day last Saturday, formed a guard of honour as his coffin was carried from the church.
Clubs from Leitrim and local school children formed a guard of honour all along the road as the funeral procession made its way to the burial ground.
Under a clear blue sky on a lovely warm day with his family, friends and the county gathered round, Philly McGuinness was laid to rest.
